Long term success? Oscar and JD 75gal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh, how MFK has changed over the years... Used to be full of debates over whether the minimum tank size for an oscar was a 40 breeder or a 75, and now everyone is saying a 75 is too small. Lol.

IMO, a 75 is a perfectly acceptable long term home for an oscar, even on the off chance that the oscar grows to 14"+. As long as aggression doesn't get bad, I don't see a reason why this shouldn't work out for you.
look at a 13" oscar in a 75g and you may change your mind. this not a good scenario for the fish. I got the 180 because she was just to big to swim around in a 90g.

I have, and I disagree. As long as it is all open water (not cluttered with decor), they do just fine with a 48x18 footprint. Activity level is about the same regardless.

this is not true, large Oscar patrol there tanks none stop long as they have the tank size to do so. my large oscars in the 180 tall make use of the full tank, top to bottom. A male JD and A Oscar can get along great, add a another of either and that will go out the window. but agreed you need a 6ft 125, the 75 is to small. its only big enough for one oscar, and a few SD perhaps.

Arowanas "Patrol" the tank
Oscars "Ease" their way around tank

true but they still use the whole tank and do not, just hang out. until feeding time.

I have to agree with this. My 12" oscar definitely takes his time getting around my 225.

If you put a green severum in a 450 gallon tank, it will use the whole tank, but that doesn't mean the minimum tank size for a green severum is 450 gallons...

This is true, as always its IMHO, from my own experience. and what I think is good for my fish. or the fish. I am sorry if coming across as a challenge to you or any one else. :)

No big deal. Debating can be fun and educational. :D

That being said, long as prepared to do fin level water changes twice a week to keep nitrates in check. tank condition wise should be good.
