Longest Flower ray in captivity

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Also, if you could include things like whether or not an auto drip system, well/city water (R.O. / D.I.), type filteration, type food, size brought in from wild, tank size, tank mates. All information would be a huge help to those wanting to keep this beautiful species. Has to be something common between those that keep them sucessfully long term.

Well I will post my experience mostly so we can refer to it later as I update on mine.

I have a flower ray that I got about 2 months ago. This ray from the past history I got has been in captivity for a year to two years. It is a female, was brought in through Shawn around 7-8" in size. Previous owner had her in with a mix of other rays (castexi, motoro, hystrix and I think an orb). A freind got all the rays and kept the flower for a few months until I was able to pry her from his grasp :)

She is now approaching 13" disc. Was a little under 12" when I got her....she eats very aggressively and anything I through in there, shrimp, smelt, tilapia, pollock, gel food, worms, pellets (sinking cichlid, massivore, sturgeon). She is in a tank that is part of my main display, which is around 650 gallons, on a drip of about 80 gallons per day, city water run through a sediment filter and 2 carbon blocks. Changed every 6 months. She is currently in with a 7" marbled male and a 11" marbled female. Tank temperature is kept right at 80 degrees.

Mines just getting over the two year mark in captivity.

Skynoch has the record I think ,his are well over 20" and I bet he's had them for 4-5 years

I think mine is a little over the 4 year mark and is about 26" I would have to guess. It's a female and was brought in wildcaught at around 8". I started off with her and a tiger in there own tank using a mix of ro/tap feeding nightcrawlers. I got them on to shrimp and when they outgrew the 280 they were in I moved them over to a 2200 gallon tank. The 280 was done with manual waterchanges about 30% every 2-3 days. My water is from a community well with a ph around 8 and a hardness of about 450-600 ppm. The temp was 84-86 on this tank. They use chlorine in the treating of the water. My 2200 uses a drip system with one sediment and 2 carbon blocks. The sediment was 1 micron and the carbon were 5 microns each. My temp usually stays around 82 in this tank. She didn't do great in this tank at first as she was about the same size as most the other rays or only slightly bigger. Once she got around the 22" mark she started to eat more aggressively and then when I downsized the amount of tankmates she did even better. I've found she has done best with at least twice a day feedings and temp at least 84. I find the multiple feedings are required for her to put weight on. Triggering breeding with the tiger and flower is the same as with other rays but double to triple the trigger reactons for them.

I do not know much at all about the original owner's setup for my ray. I feed mine once daily to near saturation (as much as she wants) and then generally 1 little feeding sometime during the day.
