Longnose Gars - Lepisosteus Osseus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
fish are looking good michael! IMO longnoses don't get nearly as much press as they deserve, this was actually the first species of gar that i ever kept. keep us posted with updates!--

Thanks Solomon.

I agree with peoples sentiments about the LNG in this thread. I think that their sleek bodies and heavy spotted tails in contrast with their unspotted bodies make for a very interesting gar. They're my favorite gar type to date.

They are not as skittish as the shortnose gar, but they take longer to eat (catching at the tip of their jaws and slowly shifting it down to their gape) and this does cause a lot of interest from other fish in what they've got. Other gars and arowana's will make you cringe trying to steal food from your longnose - beware!

definitely agree! my current longnose (like those in the past) has learned to nab the food quickly, using the advantage of the longer range of the snout, and then shoots off to another area of the tank to manipulate the food and swallow it.
i'm sure it learned quickly that if it just stayed in one spot and tried to manipulate the food for swallowing, it would lose its capture pretty fast to its tankmates.

and you are right, they are somewhat skittish, but far less than the shortnoses. i'd like to grow another one (or maybe 3) out to keep in my big tank, but for now the Croc II just doesn't allow any newcomers and tends to periodically "re-initiate" the smaller tankmates. gars and their mood swings...--

Croc. II, huh? Email me some pictures sometime. I've not seen one of those except in the ID websites. Don't suppose you have any extra swimming around...

Thank you! I can't wait until they're bigger.

There are two, they just would not stay together when the camera was out. The third gar in the photos is a florida gar. I can probably get some shots with both longnose gars featured, but in the meantime I assure you that there are two in the tank.

I must have gotten confused, cos I didn't see any pics with all three gars inside, and mistook their identities. My all-time favourite gar as well, but sadly, they aren't available in my country - yet.
