Like most things on the internet, there is a lot of BS out there - seems to be another one of those sites.

Because its a store site isn't giving false information like that illegal?
only if you can legally prove damages do to it and intent to misinform.

but personally i think if your on the internet and only check one site your asking for trouble.

^ No I totally agree with you, but one thing I can imagine happening is one person gets loads of advice that an O needs a minimum of 55/75g, but then finds ONE site that says 30g and they'll go for that...

Shame but true...

Poor O's ....

That's a site for a local store... of course they lie about tank requirements...

They say it only needs a 30 gal... so you buy a 30 gal...

3 months later you come back and buy a 55 gal...

6 months you come back and buy a 75 gal...

The lie pays off...

Which is why it's better to take advice from an experienced fish keeper who offers advice on a forum. We have nothing to loose/gain.

Since when do sales people have a reputation of being honest people?

it when the people DONT go back to upgrade thats the prob.

tbh this is nothing really. i mean im on pretty much every minute of my life and always here how walmart say their pacus can live in a 10g. its one of those things u hear about but will wait to see it for urself.

soooooooo when i was last in florida i went in to a walmart with a fish section....not ONLY did they say it could live in a 10g but also that it only grew to 10"!!!!!!

even my mum gasped lol

That is so true as well... its one thing when you buy the fish and setup the tank - but to maintain a healthy tank is what people forget.

I must admit I also didn't realize that as well when I started out - luckily I love the hobby and am quite happy to dish out when I need to.

Between feeding my cats and my fish and everything else it costs a fortune every month.

So true. I have to put disclaimers like 150+ gallon or 6x2x2+ to sell fish. Because of Morons like that guy!!!

Its a shame though... people get enough bad advice from the pet stores you'd hope that at least looking online would provide them with the better info needed.

Especially considering most people now do look online for information on pretty much anything...

lol at the toys section.

anyways I've seen this many times with various fish and all of the chain store labels are that way. Oscars, midas, jaguars are labeled as 40g+ koi are labeled as 75g+ (imagine a 3' fish in a 4' aquarium lol) pacus are labeled as 55g+.

I say a single oscar can live in a 55g, but it has to be the right type of 55g, a 12.5" wide one will not work. but a 15" wide by 18" tall one would work. cramped but it would work. 75g would be better. 125g minimum for a pair.

for me I saw the 55g min on oscarfishlover.com and thought hey I've got a 55 and thought that would work, and of course I have the 12.5" one so it became an issue with turning around. he managed but it was tight. I then also made the mistake of looking at him alone in their and thinking he needed a buddy, enter tiny my now 10" albino. so for 5 months they were extremely cramped and it becaqme more apparent with each inch. when I first got my male red he was 5" and he was 8" when I added my albino (she was 5") they grew from those to 12" and 10" respectivly and it became obvious it wouldn't work.

Or i least to me and my wife it was obvious, maybe not so much to many craigslisters. lol

so from experience those numbers are bs.

Alot of info, even in many books is just recopied from older books.Back in the old days it was acceptable to keep these large fish in small tanks, stunted. And a lifespan of a few months to a year or two was considered normal for these fish.
There have been great advances in fishkeeping, especially in the last 15-20 years.Heres to hoping all that old garbage dissapears.
