Okay, well i made a minnow trap from a 3 liter bottles, and it looks very nice. So today i decided to set it in... well i put some octopus (the smell is very strong) and some dog food in it (beef dog food)...i went down to the creek behind my house which is pretty big. But i went to where it forms a pond which is like 34-40 feet accross... to my suprise the surface was frozen but i took a piece of wood and broke the ice up.( it was like 1/2 inch thick) and threw my trap in 4ft from the bank. Was that far enough? I am going for small sunnies or bass or whatsoever and i would say it was a good distance. Anyway i tied it nice and snuggly and waited to see if fish would come. I waited around 30 minutes and i saw a huuuuge rock bass swim by with around 15-20, 1/2-2 inch fry! They kinda stopped and kept going. After that i left.

Well my question is do you think that even though the water is frozen at the top i will be able to get anything by tommorow in there? And does the water effect what you catch? Like the temperature... would they still go in the minnow trap?

Thanks guys.

Come on guys be helpful i get views but no answears! Please i feel so excited lol.

Well I am not that experienced in fresh water trapping, but 4 feet sounds like a good throw out. Is your trap floating, because if it isn't then I wouldn't worry about if the surface is frozen or not, the good stuff will be at the bottom. The only thing I wonder is how deep it is around your trap, if it is close to the surface, maybe on a foot deep, then it may get frozen in the surface and you may not get much.

Do you have any pics of it, I havent heard of a soda bottle trap before?

I don't think it's fry... I think the bas was chasing a school of minnows... North American fish do not have parental behaviors like cichlids

Well maybe it was minnows or something small, but is there hope of small sunnies or bass 1-2 inches big fitting in a 1-2 inch hole. And it's like 4 feet deep where the trap is and it is underwater,
i am wondering if small fish would enter it at this weather.

My GUESS would be that since it so cold out, food would be scarcer, so if the fish are there, they would probably be likely to head to your bait.

you might be able to catch some fish but they'll be small. I wouldn't worry about the frozen surface.

Yeah that's what i am going for, small sunnies or bass in the lake. The sunnies in the lake are crazy beatiful i will make pics if i catch any.

Nets are more effective at this time of year. Easier to catch fish in nets at this time of year than in the summer.

Fish are cold blooded. For this reason their metabolism slows when temps decline. Fish are less likely to enter the trap at this time of year since they don't need to eat as much.
