While visiting a few fish joints in Charlotte last week - I came upon this big guy at Wet Pets in Gastonia, NC. Wish he was in a bigger tank, but he looked peaceful enough I guess ...

The sign read: This Red Tail Catfish was acquired in 1983. He used to live at Tropic Pets in Charlotte. He was bought with the intention of being sold, however, he was never sold and eventually came about to be sort of a novelty fish. This cat has made its journey over to Wet Pets after 23 years! He's truly a family pet now!

I don't think they quite get 6', but I'm sure it would have been a little bigger if it had've been in a bigger tank.

Oh well ... at least they're kept him alive for 20+ years. It's more than most fishkeepers can say.

I would definitely say that fish is stunted, but it looks good. They should build it a pond!

Wow! I always had a feeling that even stunted growth wouldn't put an RTC down and out... they are just true monster fish!

Thanks for sharing! :headbang2

I'd wager someone has skipped a water change or three while raising this beast. After 20 years, he should kinda resemble:

:WHOA: The first one looks like a feeder compared to the one you posted Oddball.

That RTC is stunted for sure but still looks good according to the picture. I have seen RTC at 5 years old grown up in 180 gal tanks w/ proper diet and water changes that are bigger then that. Maybe this shows you can slow down the growth and still keep them looking good??
