Hey guys,

I'm looking at getting a 200 gallon aquarium. Right now I have a 90 gallon with a couple of Red Bellies in it. I've been looking all over for a different type of freshwater predator for this new tank. If you guys have any suggestions as to what I should stock the 200 gallon with and why, I would really appreciate it.

Also, what size sump would you recommend for this size aquarium?

Thanks for the help.

How about an Umbriferum (Umbee) central american cichlid.

For a 200g I'd say you could get away with a few things...but why not get a few more red bellies and make a shoal in that nice new tank?

sump size is basically whatever you can fit under the stand lol.

How many red bellies would I be able to keep in a 200 then?

Probably 6....you will need strong directional flow from one side of the tank to the other like a river so they can "swim upstream"....so-to-speak...and good plant coverage.
....and Welcome to MFK.

Are there any other type of piranhas that would be doable in a 200G?

I think the other piranhas available get way to big. Even red bellies get fairly large..or can. I have had piranhas but only RBP.
Also, availability is definitely an issue. Piranha aren't legal in many states.

Yeah, that's what I figured on the size of other piranhas. Obviously with them being messy eaters, the filtration has to be amped up. Would you recommend using a canister filter along with the sump then?

Nah...just maybe up the pre filtration and add some bio...you may not even need to do anything. Wait and see. A big part of this hobby is actually trial and error, and every given setup is different some way.
Your bio colony might easily adapt and your mechanical filtration may surprise you..I say try it...two at a time....
