looking at pumps

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
those plastic pumps from ebay are junk. get the mags instead. mag makes a mag 36 which does 3600 at 0' head height. get two of them. i had many plastuc pond pumps and they always broke. there junk.

it just has a 30 day warranty? that does not sound like such a good deal on a very critical piece of filter equiptment. Better keep a few extra on hand.

Warranty: 30-days excluding impeller

All I can say is that you make up the aditional cost of the filter in the electrical bill inside a year if you pick the right one. Gallon/Watt is the way to look at it and of the 3 wave wins. You really want that kind of push for a tank of that size so don't skimp.

Here's the analysis:

E-bay pump (price $156 without shipping and tax) at 5ft is 4300gph. At $.10 per kwh it will cost $376.68 per year to run if it last that long.

Wave 1/6 (catalog price $525) at 5ft is 3900gph. At $.10 per kwh it will cost $216.37 per year to run.

That's about a $160 per year difference. With the discounts and promotional to MFK members, in a year in a half the Wave pump is paid for. Not to mention the savings year after year. As Hulon mentioned all the Wave excluding the 1/15 is equipped with the best motor (Baldor) made in the US.

i have experience with Baldor motors, we use a lot of them on the big trucks at work. i've had to replace a couple because our construction guys are barbarians, not because Baldor makes bad products.

and i see your point about the electricity usage. part of my motivation to get this huge tank is because running 3 large tanks costs far more than i can afford. i've had $400 electric bills in the winter time. and i know that Edison changed their cut points for the tiers again and i'm afraid my bills are gonna go even higher this year.

i figured running one HUGE tank would be cheaper than running 3 big tanks. actually it'll replace 4 tanks because i was planning on putting the red jewels and synodontis cats in the sump.

I'll say this i have used the cheaper pumps to a bad ending ..They burn out really quike and use tons more electricity ..Wether you use the Wave product or another i still say shop around some more and check there watt usage and warranties and such the cheaper ones you will see that you really are not saving the 50 to 60 percent you think you are all i can say is bite the bullet for your Boys :headbang2shoot sell one of the other tanks or somethen...Check out reefflow and- Iwaki- mak- hayward- grainger all of them then check the wave product line with the same GPH and make up your own mind:Dbut don't buy the ebay ones :nilly:

yes sir.. this sump stuff is new to me.. all of my filtration previous to this has been fluval canisters and foam filters (and some HOB that my ex thought were the bees knees).

i'm determined to do this the right way. thanks for the guidance. ;)

i found a midland pump that looks interesting. but it seems a little high on the electricity usage. 6500 gph @ 8' of head, 925 W. looks like 7 gallons per watt. but the pump is currently $95 on ebay, not sure what the actual retail price is though. the auction ends in about 45 minutes and i'm not going to rush into this, so i'll miss out on this one.

looks like the seller has it listed several times and also in lots of 5.. lol.

ok, i know midland crane is a good name, they make industrial pumps in all sizes. what do you guys think? i think as far as electricity usage the wave pumps have it hands down. the initial cost and the gph compared to this pump are my stumbling blocks.

That's where you have to make the decision ...Are the prices worth taking the chance? it might well be a good moter what about the pump assembly whats the warranty ? the watt usage is off the charts witch will hit your electric bill hard thats what i was talken about you could probly by another pump in 6 months of higher electric bill..In the end it's up to you what you want to do....:DI think Ken was offering you a discounted price on them He builds koi ponds..But you would have to ask him ....

ok, to get the same or close to the same gph @ 8' of head i would need this wave pump: 0506 Wave II 1/2 HP8400 GPH / 5.31 ft. Head @ 600 Watts35 Lbs.600 Watts / 5.40 Amps @ 115 Voltz$ 689.00

going by my last couple months electricity usage and what i paid for the electricity that i used. i'm paying approximately $.23 cents per KWH.

and using that as my base, the midland pump would cost me approx $150 per month to run, and the wave pump would cost me $96 per month to run. which means in one year i could save almost enough to buy the wave pump.

it apparently is NOT cheaper to run one HUGE aquarium than it is to run 3 big aquariums. the only major difference in my cost would be the heating. and now i'm not sure if having that huge hunk o water will actually work against me.
