Looking For a "Conversation Starter" Type Fish for My 125 Gallon - Suggestions?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Big cichlids are always cool, oscars, green terrors, frontosa (My favs), etc. Possibly a tea cup ray or two.... A large group of exodon may work, and would likely be active and fun to watch eat. Catfish are cool, plus there are so many to choose from. Upside down cat species, glass catfish, etc. Pufferfish are cute and personable. A FW Cuda are always cool and generally active and fierce. Or simply a giant school of small fish, like tetras. Angelfish and discus are nice large schoolers. And hatchetfish are active plus have an interesting anatomy.

Yes, big cichlids are neat and all but to a non hobbyist they look like any common fish nothing over the top crazy! the first time i saw a stingray in somebodies HOUSE- i thought it was a fake decoration. It just could not be real! For non hobbyists it is amazing the first time you see something like that. But as a member stated it could not live in there for life. Some neat fish are:
Ropefish
Snowflake moray eel (saltwater)
Gulper catfish (this thing will defiantly be "different".)
Water cow

But a single large species of freshwater puffer like a fahaka is your best option IMO. EXTREMELY interactive (like a cichlid) but not the traditional looking fish. A large pufferfish that follows you around the room is going to start a conversation.

Wow...thanks for all the suggestions. These are great. I'm not big into "schooling fish" so that probably won't work. I like having just one or two different fish. I was really stuck on rays but my tank is just too small and there is no room to upgrade to a bigger tank either. I like the idea of the puffer fish. That might be pretty cool. I also like the ideas of catfish but don't they get huge? Maybe I'll throw some bullheads in the tank:)

Thanks for all the ideas guys. I'll let you know what I ultimately end up getting and I'll post a picture too.

My top three suggestions would be this then:
Frontosa's (Even if they're kind of an average looking fish)
Teacup ray (Not an expert but some may be able to fit)
FW Cuda/similar (Mention barracuda and any guest will go nuts usually lol)
Of course I'm a bigger fish expert in SW not FW....

You should do the puffer... Bullheads do not come right up to the glass and are pretty average looking catfish... Up to you but I highly recommend the puffer! :D

I'd think a knife fish would be a good conversation starter. Or some bichirs. Maybe I'm boring though. :P

To me nothing stands out more than a pearly flowerhorn like a kamfa or zz. These fish are very conversation provoking.

Polypterus! One of the oldest living species on the planet and likely closely related to the first fish to walk on land.

Sounds to me like you should be looking into the different types of freshwater oddball fish that are available...

As mentioned, you could go the freshwater puffer route, although i'm not sure i would recommend a Fahaka (even though a 125G is considered the absolute minimum for one) or an MBU... but maybe some of the smaller active species might interest you?

Birchirs could be something else to look into for sure for bottom dwellers...

Also, you could maybe look into Leaf Fish if you don;t mind something very sedentary, or maybe the freshwater butterfly fish?

Otherwise, what about a freshwater African Butterfly Fish?
