Looking for a little SA aggression

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Try looking into the Thorichthys(firemouth) or Cryptoheros(convict) families. Most of the less well known members of those familes look better than the more common members, plus they can all breed in your 75 with room for other fish - tetras, cories, plecos etc. If you want aggression, any breeding cichlid = aggression.

I swear good pictures of pikes are doctored. Regani picture with the amazing blue, black and yellow, marmorata with beautiful blue and black spots, saxatilis with brilliant blue fins....then I watch videos of them and they seem so dull. :(
yeah I hear ya about wanting color.., but I was talking about them providing behavioral uniqueness for you to watch, since you started out with the idea of some SA aggression.
it's so hard choosing how to get the most from limited tank space!

Yeah. I have not completely given up on the idea, but now that the gf has seen the salvini, she is pressuring me to make my aggression choice to be them instead of pikes.

I know! I wish I had a 125, then I could get some of the larger pike species or a bigger set of SA cichlids (which is what I still want to strive for and it's the biggest reason I haven't pulled the trigger on salvini).

I feel your pain. spousal tradeoffs make choices even harder, because it really is fun when 'they' enjoy 'our' fish.
but now my husband is calling my carpintis/texas?, his/ the fish I was gonna change out for a stunner from a known locale.
:-/
oh well, that's better than members who get nagged about their tanks :-]

i am about to stock my tank with some salvini with hopes of getting a pair. what about an istlanum 'red' ? I have experience with grammodes and salvinis. they tend to retreat to hideouts alot but once they realize you are the hand that feeds they come out a fair amount..(im sure target fish help as well) as for the istlanums, they are alot more personable and very active. good choice in moving on to more aggressive :)

Yeah. She doesn't really claim any if the fish as her own. She basically makes me run pictures of what the fish will look like to make sure it isn't too ugly. LOL

A friend of mine is thinking about ordering from Rapps. If he does, I might chance 3-4 sveni pikes or maybe 6 reganis.

If you are still considering CA cichlids, a pair of Cryptoheros sajica could go great.
Sajica Cichld (T-bar cichlid).

So I went to Mike's Cichlids in New Symrna, FL. It's this awesome fish farm with a ton of cichlids available.

Anyways, I picked up some more aggressive small SAs and some similar aggression CAs (in other words, pretty peaceful for most CAs LOL).

Archocentrus panamensis sp. "red" 1m/2f
Australoheros sp. "red ceibal" 1m/2f

I couldn't believe the color on these guys when Mike pulled them out of the water. Absolutely gorgeous. I will post some pics after they are acclimated and settled in. :)
