looking for a red fish

cryptoheros panamensis its not 100% red but it's beautiful and peaceful I don't know about availability though
 
I don't think you are going to find a cichlid that will meet your needs very easily. I have some of these 2 kinds of rainbows and have been extremely happy with them. They are active, get a decent size, don't mess with my fish, and don't mess with plants. They normally do best in fairly hard water, but I have had no problem keeping mine in tap water at 7.0 ph with some of my geo's and less aggressive fish. I have 4 of each of them.

I'm not sure if its red enough for you, but a red headed geophagus would work very well with the temperament and water params that you're working with.
 
I just picked up a f0 chocolate at my LFS for $12. Beat that! I know peathenster get's fish from Ken all the time though :( I'm totally jealous but there's a few pretty good fish stores near me.
