not really, you gota really stick your siphon tube into the sand to pull it up. so just avoid getting it too close to the surface of the sand and you'll manage to clean it without sucking up too much of the actual sand. only heavier objects will sink into the sand, im watching my drift wood slowly disappear haha. all other particulates will just settle ontop of the sand.
