Looking for Cichlid suggestion

I have never kept dwarf compressiceps, but from what I understand they are more of a tropical species, with an optimum temp range 75-80"F, pH on the low side (5 to just below 7) although aquarium bred individuals may be more tolerant.
Without personal experience, I defer to others to others that have kept them.
The Crenicichla I kept were wild caught saxitillus from Uruguay, and I kept them on the cool side most of the year, although in summer my tanks would hit low 80s'F.

Beautiful fish.

Ahh ok understood. I think I'll probably steer clear from the pikes. Perhaps just a group of balzanii would be best with a few dojos. Perhaps some type of schooler to fill out the tank. Was hoping for some other small cichlid to put in there for variety but doesn't appear that any are fitting the bill.

I've seen where some of the apistogrammas are found in similar water ways (borellii specifically). Would this be a fish that could mix well with the balzanii or likely not a good mix.

I agree. There are A borrellii found in Uruguay (and in some of the higher elevations of Ecuador, Peru), which would be perfect in those lower temps,

Personality wise would that be a smart combo in a 75? What do you think would be smart numbers? Does a 75 have room for a good group of balzanii and borrellii? Plus a few dojos in your opinion? If so what numbers would be smart? Any need for a schooler as well or room for one?

Personally I think I would just keep the gymnos by themselves with your dojos and maybe a schooler species. I've never had the pleasure of keeping these but one of the guys in a local group does (or has) and I believe he kept about 8 of them together (2 males) in a 90 with a large school of cories (15+) and Buenos aires tetras. It was an awesome tank. But duanes duanes probably has more knowledge on the subject.
