Looking for fish to stock my tank with.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is better to have 6 of the kind of tetra you are getting. You can easily put more than that and also you can have more than one kind of tetra with 6 in a group. In a tank that size you could have like a group of 20 neons and a group of 12 lemon tetra or something.

Neons don't shoal as tight as rummy nose tetras but those are delicate and timid.

Don't get a peacock bass unless you like seeing gourami becomming chow.

I suggest Corydoras catfish,Peacock gobies,Silver dollars,Kuhli loaches,Zebra Loaches,Hatchet fish,Rainbowfish,Bulldog Pleco,Celebes Rainbowfish,Kribensis,Keyhole cichlid and some species of spiny eels can be suitable for a community but most aren't.To master fishkeeping do research before you buy any fish.:grinno:

Zebra danios
Keyhole cichlids
Large plecos if you want a big fish
silver dollars
Red tailed shark
20 more neons

I think this guy is on the wrong website...www.MONSTERFISHKEEPERS.com

I have a redtailed shark and really enjoy him being in my tank. Look into some of the rainbow fish from australia. Those are really awesome looking and get very colourful and about 6-7 inches.

They look really awesome when they grow larger.

Thanks for the info. I know I am probably out of my element being on monsterfishkkepers, but there is some good info on here. I tried cichlids by default and it was just an awful experience. I was unprepared to say the least, but it made me not want them anytime soon. I am still looking into everyone's reccomendations. Keep all the options coming... I can never get too many! Thanks

No worries, I was just teasing. I am sure everyone here on MFK enjoys ANY fish question you throw at them. Although if you navigate to the top right of the page you will see a box and choose other sites to visit. There is one called Aquaria Central, I am sure they have more info on the types of fish you would like to add. Please post pictures of your aquarium. We all love pictures :D

Take Care and happy fish keeping

If your tank is 6 feet long 2 feet wide and 2 feet tall, it is NOT 80 gallons. You're only 100 off though. :)

6'*2'*2' is 24 cubic feet, about 7.5 gallons per cubic foot, so 24*7.5=180

try again. Maybe you should recommend something that actually fits the criteria he listed. ;)

Plus they get too big, regardless of whether its a 180 or not.

I have an 80 gallon long. It is 6' long and 2' wide. I am using a Rena canister filter which I have been pretty happy with. I would like one or two fish in the 6" range so it fills up the tank a little bit more. I currently have a shrimp in the tank and I have seen loaches eat shrimp so I have to stay away from those unfortunately. So out of the ones you listed, do any of them get to be about 6 inches? Possibly any others you may be able to think of that get around that size? Thanks

there are a lot of 6 inch fish that will be happy to deal with the shrimp population in your tank.

I retook the measurements yesterday for another thread I have started. Come to find out it is 6 feet long 13" wide and 21" deep. So I was off just a little bit. :)

That's 85 gallons. Aside from neons, dwarf gourami and swordtails, how about trying some snails? Let me know which ones you like and I'll run in a few suggestions for you along with advice for calcium supplements to keep healthy shell growth. They can be fascinating to say the least and are compatible with hillstream loaches and kuhli loaches. Both loach species are also compatible with shrimps however hillstreams prefer cooler waters with powerful flows so hillies may be out of the question. Do you plan to make the tank planted?
