Looking for good filtration that won't break the bank.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If the a.c. 70 fit the 125 they would be fine for a small bio load....couple them with a sponge filter and you can support a large load ...as I am doing on a 90

no disrespect intended ..but if the a.c. 70 fit the 125 they would be fine for a small bio load....couple them with a sponge filter and you can support a large load ...as I am doing on a 90

I have 2 pre-filters hat were going to be out on both filters to improve bio filtration. For short term, it would have been fine. Each filter turns 300 gallons by itself. Two would have been a little over 5 times turnover. Would have worked fine until my sevs and the geos got to 3/4 their full size. And since both are very slow growers, it would have been at least 6 months. Maybe as long as 12 (thought that is probably wishful thinking).

I get mixed reviews about fluval as a brand. But I read nothing but good things about the FX5. The Rena xp3 gets mostly good reviews. I was an eheim jockey for a long time until I got one of their Jäger heaters that failed. It super heated my water. I caught it at 89 degrees. Everything in the tank was dead except for my rams. Even they were suffering. I was able to scoop them out and slowly acclimate them back down to the normal 81 temp I keep all my SA tanks at. I guess my runner up has been different brands for different things. Fluval would probably take the cake for filters with Rena being a slightly distant second. I am working with ViaAqua brand heaters now. They work well, but I am hoping to eventually save up for the titanium ones. They look better in my opinion and apparently function better because of a temperature control panel that is not inside the heater itself. I read that makes them last longer too. :)

How big is your tank? I would consider the FX5, but my main concern there is the fact that if it fails for any reason, I will have to wait for new filtration to arrive. I don't have any backups waiting. Could be several days of waiting and my fish would suffer or possibly die. But then again, I want a reliable brand for my first canister filters and SunSun gets good reviews, but many people admit they have to buy spare parts because it breaks down. Could be a real hassle and would put me in the situation I am trying to avoid.

My new tank is gonna be 500-600 litres and I have some other tanks which if needed could lend some filtration if I have any major challenges!! Thanks for ur info and opinions appreciated!

What if I did a canister and a large HOB? Could I do a AC110 HOB and a Rena xp3? The HOB does mostly polishing work through bio filtration and the canister would be my larger source of mechanical and chemical filtration due to a larger variety of media options. Plus the turnover rate of the HOB is 500 and the canister is 350. So a 850 GPH turnover would be great. Plus I can add my other pre-filter sponge to the AC110 for added bio filtration.

You would do better by using the canister for bio and the 110 for mechanical. Several users here swear by the 110 for mechanical.

Okay. I think the XP3 has 3 trays. What would be my best layout in the trays for the most effective bio filtration?

Do you think I can still use both for my filtration without needing to upgrade?

Nothing wrong with the x.p.3. And ac110 combo, that combo would be a good permanent solution to filtering a 125, run one tray of sponges and 2 trays ceramic in the can.... in the110 try a double sponge setup... use the bio from the110 in the x.p.3... less to buy

you can get an xp3 api filsar from that fish place for 115 dollars plus 8 dollar shiping(8 dollars were I live) Maybe a little over buget but they are good filters. Then in 6 months when you have money you can add 1-2 large HOBs... On ebay you can get 2 sun suns for 100 dopllars and free shiping but i have never had one. They have mixed reviews but i have never owned one...
