Looking for someone to review my indoor pond filter.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will go out and drag inside the two big barrels today.
I hope to be able to keep my current filter running while you guys help me design and build the new one.
Then just switch them out in no time at all.

After I bring in the barrels I can take a photo of them.
I really dont know what the next step is...

I have been searching here on this forum for other examples of indoor ponds with DIY filters to get ideas from, but so far I have not found anything like my situation.

As stated in PM...I should have the plans for you fairly soon. I had an article to finish and get to my publisher...

My pond is:
Just under 8 foot end to end long
Nearly 5 foot wide
About 2 foot 6 inches high.
There is an addition of a 30 gal aquarium that is part of the pond as well.

This puts the most water down in the pond that I will need to build a filter for at under 750 gal, with another 30 on top of that in the connected aquarium.

OK.....here we go. I couldn't find a picture of egg crate but if you run an MFK search I'm sure you'll find a million pictures ot it...You can also use a plastic sheet and drill holes in it but thats a lot of work...

I also included a bio-tower plan for the hell of it. Theres also a bitmap copy in case you want to download it and play with it in paint.

Wolf, nice simple design... Wish the wife would let me put a bio tower abover the tank in the living room :)

QUESTION:
In the above design, what is the aimed for water level?

The reason i ask is that at the very top of the barrel you have it shown that the "inlet" pipe is off to one side, my guess is that your reason is that you seek to cause the water to spin inside the barrel correct?

This seems to point out that the water level is going to be up near the top right?

Its best in the middle because the buffing pads have a hole in the center. You can order cases of them from 17" to 21" on Ebay for under 30.00 and they last forever...use a larger diamitor standpipe to prevent flooding.

I didn't make it very clear but you can cement the pvc pipe supports to the sides of the barrel. I've run a single filter like this on a fairly large pond...(3500 gallon range) and had great results. If you use a submersable pump like i suggested...then the only extra space will be the drum itself and the cement block stand. You can probubly do away with your heater as well because the pump will heat the water. (control the tempreture with water changes it wont ever get too high.)
