Looking for someone to review my indoor pond filter.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The one concern I have is with the watertight fitting I will need to have for the main drain out of the filter.

I have been reading on this DIY forum about Bulkhead fittings and it was suggested that electric fittings would be the way to go.

I checked the normal pipe fittings and there is a small problem with such fittings being able to fit flush to the wall of the barrel.

I went with the electric fittings and also got some "O-rings" that I hope will be the right size.

It's
Building The Indoor Pond Filter day!!!!!!!

Ok, I got a question right off the bat:
I am at the moment draining all the water out of my current pond filter system .
Now it has tons of open-cell foam to it, as well as a trickle filter media as I have posted about already.

As I set up the new filter in it's place I need to know how to get the new filter up and running correctly?

My main concern is about the bacteria that my new filter will need to work.
I know at the moment all the parts of my new filter are clean and free of any types of helpfull bacteria.
I need to jump-start the filter bio meadia so here is what i was planning....

My plan is to place a lot of the current open-cell foam into the pot scrubbers section with them.
The idea I have is that the foam more than likely has already a good healthy supply of bactoria growing on it, so if the foam were mixed up into the section of the new filter with the pot scrubbers that the pot scrubbers would soon be up and running with healty bactoria too.

OK?
The plan will work?

definatly use as much of the old media as possible. it wont mater if you mix differant types or if the end result looks a bit differant than the plans...after all the filter I built using that plan ended up with some changes too...

For the bulkhead fitting... The threaded fittings are great. Thats what I used on mine but I got a pair of really thick dence foam washers rather than o-rings. I had a bit of trouble getting the o-rings to seal against the curve of the barrel. I found the fat foam washers in the plumbing department but I cant remember what they were for...
