Lost a ray today

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The tank is a 180 grow out tank. Tank was put into service on February 11th. All media was transferred to the sump from established tanks and filters. No fish have been added since the Rays back in February. They have been eating great up until recently, i did notice they weren't as voracious while eating over the past couple weeks.

I dont see any bones showing in the original picts/video.
A healthy ray will have a fat tail especially at the base. As said previously the back (stomach) should be as tall as the head, or atleast close.

hard to say.. PH swing? wont know if that is happening without a meter. Maybe a parasite? Maybe from slowing starving and just got to unhealthy.
I use this one

Since your new to rays you may not notice the obvious signs of parasites. "coughing" "breathing out of one side"...etc.

You got these from jimr...correct? If they are p14 mix, sometimes p14 are the first fish to show signs of a problems.

another thing that is good "insurance" for rays are a quality UV light. Will help with redox, and parasites...etc. Im a believer

My advise, is nightcrawlers. thats where i would start, if it refuses them, and wont get a belly from eating them something is wrong!

Yes they are from JimR. P14xBD mix. The tank has an aquaUV light on it. I have turned it off for the time being while I dose with prazipro. I have night crawlers. I'm trying to get her to eat those

Best to chop the night crawlers. I still occasionally mix chopped nightcrawlers in with cut tilapia, shrimp, and scallops for my rays, aro, and dat. Good for fast growth and fattening up fish. Also good for first food for freshly imported rays(not that there's nany of those anymore) I've saved many a starving fish including rays with chopped nightcrawlers!

No Luck with chopped crawlers. I have black worms coming in today. Lets hope those get her eating. Besides being scary skinny she seems to be acting normal, swimming around the tank, going up and down the sides.

Wow, that's unusual for a ray to not want nightcrawlers. Probably should start looking for other possible problems. One overlooked problem more people have had than they are aware of is malfunctioning electrical components. Heaters, pumps, wavemakers can "leak" current into the water causing all kinds of issues with their fish. Just one thing to look at. Hope you get to the bottom of this soon. I can't imagine what you're going through

Nitrates are coming down. She is crushing black worms. Will move up to crawlers in the next couple days. Then back to a more diverse diet of scallops, tilapia and shrimp. Any tips of getting her to start taking hikari carnivore pellets?
