Lost Leo pup.

Do you think this applies to all cb rays? I am actually surprised to hear of how many people are losing their leo pups. I have been breeding motoros for a long time with only one death due to a birth defect. Yea I see runts in a litter or some that tend to grow twice as fast compared to their sis or bro to a certain point but never have I lost a pup and believe you me I'm no perfect ray keeper. I guess in my experience motoro pups seem much more hardy than leo pups making motoros ideal for the fist time ray keeper. Wish I had a breeding pair of leo to test it out!

I think that Motoros are definitely a hardier ray, that is why they are so often recommended for the beginner.. Notice also their birthing capacity and how prolific they are.. They are great breeders in comparison to some other species.. Seems like black ray pups are a little sensitive..

Maybe we are hearing about more deaths because more people are attempting to breed them? First time parents often times, too.. who knows?

Regret to heard that Freddy. Ray lover normally lost more than one rays either pups or adult. It's the lesson we need to learn and gain some experience anyway...We're all your sides......God bless you, buddy.

a divider from the parents? diff tank, diff water? diff tank, same water?

It's been over two months since they were born. I did move the pups from their original tank to another tank immediately. That tank was already up and running and cycled . What I did was, I drained it and filled it with water from the tank they were born in before I moved them. They seemed to be doing fine and on the third day one of the pups died. The one that died was never really active so I think it was a little weak. The one that survived was always active and is doing great.
My female is pregnant again and I'm expecting more pups by the end of April. I am going to remove the pups again because I think my chances of losing them are greater if I leave them in. Hope to have better luck next time.

It is not uncommon to lose pups in a litter. Motoros are no different. We've had nearly 60 Motoro pups here and have lost our share....

This past birthing (January 2008) resulted in 20 pups from 3 different litters born within a couple days of each other. They are nearly 2 months old now. 11 ate blackworms right away, jumped to crawlers within a week, and were sold recently. All 11 are doing well in their new homes. 3 of the 20 died....they never ate. The remaining 6 are still here. They are much thinner than the 11 that were sold. They are eating, but are much pickier about food. I'm continuing to hold them and will not sell them until I know if they are going to do well.

Pups seem to be more fragile than parents, no matter what the species. I'm sure some pup deaths are due to mistakes on the part of us breeders, but I'm sure some are natural mortality too. I keep good notes on water parameters and procedures in dealing with both adults and pups. There is much left to learn about breeding rays and I think If we all keep good notes and share our experiences we can reduce much of the mortality, but I doubt we will ever be able to eliminate it completly.
