Ive been thinking about getting an eartheater for my tank, and there are 3 species i had in mind:
Geophagus dicrozoster sp. "Colombia"
'Geophagus' steindacheri, (steiney)
Satanoperca jurupari, (devilfish)

im leaning more towards the jurupari, mainly because its the only one ive seen at my lfs...
ive read that juruparis have a slow growth rate. is this true?
what are the other two species' gowth rates?
do eartheaters have any special care requirements?

the jurupari is really cool u will love him.

With regards to jurupari - yes, you can expect a slow growth rate

Special requirements - none really to speak of, but I would get more than one - they are rather sheepish, and like company. Try for fine gravel or sand substrate & make sure they're not in with any overly aggressive cichlids. Make sure they get enough food - they typically forage along the substrate & I haven't know them to venture into the upper reaches of the tank - so get some sinking foods.

An awesome fish either way, I certainly plan on getting a couple more when space allows. Good luck!

I am supposed to pick up a few jurapari today, i had them ordered.

they are supposed to be at least 4-5" so ill see how they are. they look really nice

cool.
im still wondering what the growth rate is...
oh and how much do juruparis normally cost in the US? i though i saw some for $20 at my lfs...

$20 is typical - same at my LFS

I have had mine for the better part of a year & have not seen any huge growth rate - maybe 1" or so? They are approximately 4" and were wild caught. I've seen jurupari that are huge = 6"+ and I have to believe that these are OLD. I would be interested to know other keepers feedback on growth rate - I'm sure they may differ.

IME they slow down when they hit the 5-6" mark.....which isn't necessarily a bad thing - lighter bioload :)

Mine put on at least 2-3" in about 2 months, then really slowed down. Check the file names for dates:

Dec. 2008 - I'd say they were no longer than 3"

hmm... i probably wont get the jurupari then. i dont see any point in having it for 2 years and it not growing very much, then haveing to get rid of it because ive got to leave for college (im a high school sophomore)

how about the growth rates and prices of the other 2 eartheaters ive listed?
