Love Walmart!

Labels at the big box stores are not always some sort of conspiracy or a blatant lie to make a buck. In fact, I believe that almost all of them are a consequence of ignorance and such. So many people that work there and also the public at large still think/believe that fishes grow according to the size of their tank... or that fishes in captivity are always far smaller than their wild kin. That's how such labels come about, IMO.

And sometimes it can be true - see this thread: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?505668-ID-sharks-theories&highlight=theory - some of our own MFK-ers report slow- and small-growing IDS not exceeding 1'.

The same is occasionally observed for most other fishes, whether it is a bad keeping, dwarfism, bad genes, different species or sub-species, altogether improper ID (e.g., piraiba vs. capapretum), etc. etc. etc. This plus the fact that people tend to collect knowledge that conforms to their ideas and goals also can contribute to the prevalence of such labels.

The pacu in the photo is still small. They grow to 36" and almost 100 lbs. This guy is probably a bit over 1' and ~5 lbs.

lol Viktor I am happy to report that my ID is finally over the 1' mark and is around 13" in fact lol. Only took him 2 years. Has grow 2 inches in the few months I have had him in the 400 gal pond. Walmart shouldn't be allowed to carry more than fish food imo. I worked at a wal mart 2 years ago and they were always calling me out to tell people about the fish. More times than not I would talk them out of buying it once they heard what it would take to keep them for life. I also managed to get them to stop carrying ID sharks after I bought mine. :) I bought the most unique and largest one they had in the tank. The rest were belly up in two days I believe. They wouldn't listen when changing their filtration systems and not seeding the new system they lost over $2000 worth of fish in two weeks. They used the same nets in the q-tank in the selling tanks. Makes me sick to this day to go by the fish section there. The (expert) they have there is unbearable. I don't think he recognizes me and I always check his knowledge so I can laugh at it later. Guy knows less than a newbie but thinks he is a wizz spouting out corporate walmart fish training lol.

I have never seen channels at any walmart I been to. Kind of rare around here anywhere though. What state are you in? Might be easier just to go catch one lol. They are here in montana but kind of hard to get to about 3 hrs drive from where I live to catch them.

Cliff, glad your IDS is making strides :)

Channels are carried by many/most stores, even big box and poor quality pet stores. It may be seasonal too depending on their source.

This is really sad. Someone can lock a dog or a cat in a room for a week and animal rights are notified. Someone can also keep Pacus and Oscars in like a 30 gallon and people don't care. Just because fish suffer in silence doesn't mean they don't suffer.....

lol you guys don't know the woes of living in montana. The last remaining LPS here shut it's doors a few months ago. The only thing that resembles one now is the local petco. Tetras, guppies, and oscars max out their large fish list. The only kind of catfish they have is plecos. I asked if they could get in channels and they flat out told me no. I asked if they could get pictus, again the answer was no. I don't think they realized I was looking at the sheet they left laying around for orders. There was even RTC on that order form $2 each. They just have some policy at this local store not to get any fish that get over a certain size. This town has roughly 20,000 people in it. I have to say there are very few to no advanced aquarium hobbyist locally. I'd have to drive to Washington 12hrs, to get my hands on any quality fish. :) It is beyond tough to get catfish into Montana although none are illegal here except of course the federally banned ones. :) Any way I look at it any species of catfish will cost me a minimum of $100 due to shipping charges. Even if I found a $5 RTC on aquabid the shipping charges will be over $50 more than likely. You really have to have a passion for catfish if that's what you want in montana lol. There are only 4 known species of catfish in the wild here also. They are remote and hard to find unless you know where to look. Why do I have to love catfish so much? lol

One of my co workers left his dog in the car for 15 minutes on a cool day with the Windows cracked open. When he came out of the store his window was broken the dog was in custody of the dog police, the real police were also there. He had to go to court, pay a fine to get his dog back. Not saying what he did wasn't wrong, but people need to use some common sense once in a while
