Lovely little new Bichir

Yes pellets are an excellent choice for food. I personally rotate with Tilapia.

Will probably do similar, would be interested to know your estimated ratio of the two and how often do you you change between them. I'm hoping a ratio of about 75% pellets to 25% frozen food (tilapia, prawns & shrimp) will keep him happy & healthy.

Nom nom nom...Del chowing down on a big pellet:

Please excuse the glare; I didn't want to possibly spook him by changing the lighting at the time.

50/50 Is fine.

Personally I would not go higher than grain size 40 for sand.
I'm really not sure what grain size 40 sand is Rocksor (and would probably be different sizing here in Thailand anyway) -- do you think this pea gravel would be ok or potential for problems?

Grain with a mesh size #40 is about 0.42mm. The higher the grain size mesh #, the smaller the size. I find grain size #20 (0.85mm) pretty good, and smaller than the one you have. I tend to worry about fish swallowing substrate whole accidentally while eating, and not being able to pass through the digestive system. Over 90% of the time swallowing substrate doesn't happen.

Thx for the input Rocksor Rocksor -- for sure I have the same worry, and to me I think it's just not worth taking a chance, even if it's only about 10%. So in fact now after more consideration, I'm heavily leaning toward using tiles, maybe something like this (they won't be swallowing any of those rock lol):

I've got another thread ( https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/...teak-wood-stand-for-new-arowana.707534/page-2 ) going in the Arowana forum with more pix, so probably shouldn't load the servers extra, but here's 1 pic of what I've finally settled on (at least initially :) -- half tiled, half decent sized rocks.

In fact I'll probably replace those rocks with somewhat smaller ones, not sure my Bichir will like them now as the surface certainly isn't flat. All of that said I wouldn't be surprised if I eventually took out all the rocks around the edges.

There is a chance of the polys swallowing rocks if small enough. Sand is better for them. I'd leave the bigger ones but like you said no idea on how well they'll like it, or just tile the whole thing.

He's beautiful!!

Thanks Sarahmander -- sadly I had to bring him back to the fish shop...I got him because I thought he'd be a nice bottom dweller tank mate for my soon to be arriving young Asian Arowana. Unfortunately though, in the 5 days he was alone in the 8', 375 gallons he somehow got the impression that it was ALL for him lol: after the Arowana (about 2-3 times bigger than him) arrived and was put into the tank the Birchir went kind of beserko....Instead of staying at the bottom where he always was before he was wildly swimming back and forth at the top of tank, directly in the path of the Aro (I guess to show it was 'his' territory).

The Aro was tolerating it (at least for now, but it was clearly stressing her out); the Bichir was even bumping into her -- I have some video I'll post later. I was really kind of surprised.

While sad it was a no brainer that the Bichir had to go, it's quite an investment I've put into the Aro and she's going to be the showpiece for that tank. It's possible I'll get another Bichir later after the Aro is more confident in her new home, he was a really cool fish, just not the best of timing, my bad.
