Luck with Solo RBP?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i get that but are you familiar with other type of piranhas? I don't think the general public knows the difference between any of them as long as they have teeth

oh, as far as mice, personally i would do pinkies only. easier to digest without the fur

K awesome. Staple diet will be freeze dried shrimp, bloodworms, silversides, ghost shrimp, crayfish, and 2a month treat mice and guppies.

Mostly cause it's "popular" type and peole are saying no way you can and it's going to eat off your hand when you clean the tank mostly to prove people wrong and spesh when I put my hand in the tank when it's fully grown. Trying to prove there misunderstood.

This is a Public Classroom ??? Theres a lot of things wrong here -Almost unbelievable. Don't feed Piranha Mice or any terrestrial (land based) foods for several reasons . One, Piranha can't break down mammal fats, it causes obesity, and overall poor health. The rest of the listed diet was good enuff. Two, mammal guts fowl the water quality , once again not healthy. Three, Odds are someones gonna get upset with feeding mice - live or dead and shut your "experiment" down and in todays society might even get someone a lawsuit. Four - your attitude of saftey towards putting your hands in a small tank with a full grown Piranha is reckless esp. if other students bare witness to your success and it becomes "the thing to do." AND Last but not least - Your Teacher is a complete idiot! You did say teacher not Professor so I'm taking this classroom not to be in a Univ. or College. That RBP bites one of you and he/she will be out a Career, never teach again. Heck it might not even take that much - some rich kid gets spooked and their lawyer dad finds out ...........

I'm all in for Piranha Education but in a public classroom it should be thru film and book studies not trial and error with inexperieced Piranha keepers and a live specimen. What next a Gaboon Viper ????

lmao, the above rant made me laugh. i'm just going to say in elemantry school we had a boa constrictor in the principals office and he brought it to the assembles every month. i'm also sure lots of classrooms across the nation have snakes in them today. i'm sure they aren't being feed pellets too. i don't think the handling of a single piranha would be difficult for any fish keeper with decent experience.

other piranha types, you'll have to do a lil homework to learn about them but here's some choices that stay small and need to be kept alone

Serrasalmus spilopleura aka spilo
Serrasalmus sanchezi aka sanchezi
Serrasalmus maculatus aka mac
Serrasalmus elongatus aka elong

black rhoms are fairly cheap, as they only go for around 50-70 and it would be worth its value once it gets around the 9-12" mark although they grow VERY SLOW...

Cool always good to get a good chuckle - perhaps I was a lil' overzealous. I'm pretty sure your Princ. didn't charge a minor to feed and care for the Boa and probably didn't feed him cute lil' bunnies and hamsters during assemblies but then again in Oregon anythings possible. Here on the North East Coast PPL are a lot less forgiving and you can't walk a block without seeing a lawyer, schools are locked down, metal detectors, cops, security guards, saftey of the students is serious business.

Best to err on the side of caution in public schools, times have changed drasticly. Piranha are already feared, perseved as man-eaters, illegal in many states, and capable of inflicting wounds on careless people. I won't support any action that could further spread this hysteria.

get a rhom at least! cause they grow slower and so you won't need to upgrade tank size tha tmuch

Teachers got tank sizes 55, 40, and 30. Ballin's list of Serras. is by far better advice and I hope your last comment wasn't geared towards him getting a shaol of Pirayas or Caribes.
