how do you prevent drop eye?

that's a tough question right there.

there are mixed opinions and facts about exactly what causes droop eye and how to cure or prevent it.

one theory (and it's just theory) that I've heard is, droop eye is derived from inbred genetics, which means, all captive bred silver arowanas will inevitably get droop eye no matter what.

another theory is diet. people tend to agree that a fatty diet causes droop eye so a healthy low fat diet should 'prevent' droop eye, but not 100% guaranteed.

I once had a silver arowana that did not fall victim to droop eye, but I've only had it for about 5 months and it was only 10" or so when I sold him so that might not indicate anything. However, I kept it on a strict diet of insects and occasional shrimp.

i think the main going reason for losing the pacu is the fact that not only is it going to hit 30"+, but it will do it quickly (unless cramped space doesnt allow it) and they are very powerful fish. when is small tanks (anything smaller than an 8x4) and they freak out for what ever reason they can hurt themselves pretty bad, along with fish that get in the way, and you can kiss your aquascaping good bye. im just saying this from experience, i had one in my 600g and ended up gettign rid of it after a few months. it would eat ALL the food i put in there, would knock over all my drift wood and caves, got mean and started chewing on my catfish/heater cords/powerhead cords and would sprint into the side of the tank from time to time and mess its face up. anyway, again, its your fish, just be ready to upgrade when the time comes.

your 265g will work for a while, but as they grow they should also be upgraded to something larger. at 24"+ they will have a harder time turning in anything smaller than 24"wide.

i havnt had a problem w/ my arowana eating any of my cichlids, barbs or catfish (even ones as small as 2") for a while now, seemed to grow out of it, or maybe just got to big and slow. i wouldnt risk the corys though, the aros can probably pass them, but i know i sure as hell wouldnt want to....they are spiny little bastards and ill admit, they do look mighty tasty, like popcorn shrimp. id personally go with a bigger cat just incase.

i have heard that arowana need to be around 4 or 5 years of age to be able to spawn, or around 30". as said, there are many theories on why aros get droop eye, im leaning more towards genetics, i have never seen aussie aros or black arowana w/ droop eye....so im assuming the genes in the breeding ponds that asian aros and silvers are bred are simply over used and way too inbred at this point. diet might be a factor, but my arowana has been eating mainly mealworms, crickets, prawns and pellets most of its life...so i wouldnt assume there would be enough fat in those to be a problem, but it still ended up with droop eye in one eye .

sorry about such a long post

feeding your arowana only feeders = droopy eye.

if you give them like shrimp and insects, and pellets, they wont get droopy eye.
if he already has droopy eye, then i dunno.

how big is ur pacu? if u have the space, u can get a huge rubbermaid container for it. or build a pond. it will get huge and be a real prob. its just how they are. they swim constantly so a large pond or rubbermaid container that is as wide as it is lond would be nice so it can swim constantly in a circle w/o having to slow down.

Don't let anyone talk you into losing the pacu. It's your fish. If they don't like them then they shouldn't own one.

The 265 might be a bit crowded with the two aros and a big pacu in there, not to mention the other fish. But it would certainly be better than the 130 that they are in now. Got any pics for us?

Nice pickup!! I biger tank would be good!! & your fish will love you for it!!

I would keep the pacu, just buy the big tank, and put the 2 aero's in that. and leave everything in the 135.. just remember pacu's will get very big. a lfs had one there in a 220 high tank and the thing took almost half the tank just sitting there. and the aero's, I was at the toronto zoo, and they had a silver aero there, about 5 feet long. this thing just swimming around was splashing water out of the tank, that's what made me fall in love with the aero's. I have had 3, and all have jumped out. including my 20 in jardini. I was sad. I fed my aero's night craws. earth worms. they would gobble them up, I got bit a few times....

ive heard that males have a lower jaw that extends past their upper jaw, and females are alot thicker...but im not sure if that is 100% correct or not. honestly though, keeping the pacu long term will not be a fun experience unless you are planning on getting something 600g or bigger in the near future....not everybody can afford to buy a tnak that big let alone keep it running.
