i was told at my local fish store that the salvini cannot be sexed until 5in but the colour thing has to have something to do with the sex of these fish and what size to the start breeding

They were wrong

The female sal will have a dark patch in the middle of her dorsal fin. See Jape's photo, now THATS a BEAUTIFUL female Salvini:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

I love these fish but make sure they have some plants and places to hide. They can be bashful if they're not top dawg in the tank. good luck with him, looks to have good color and that will improve over the next few weeks if you vary the diet.

The others brought up an excellent point...be careful buying feeders. You're risking disease and if you haven't experienced it it's really not worth it. IMO get a 15-30 gallon and breed guppies or convicts. Their fry make great feeders and they're in a conotrolled environment that is essentially parasite/disease free

one more thing...females are more colorful (yellow) than the males. They will be brilliant yellow if fed well and kept in good water. My budy just bought a female we sexed at 2". Look around and you'll find it pretty easy to tell them apart. I would NOT establish a pair in a tank with GT's though

thanks alot what do you have ?

I have a JD, red oscar, 2 severums, 1 pike cichlid, 2 firemouths. Not all in the same tank though. That is what I have as far as cichlids go. :)

Headrush is correct...

females also have a black spot on the gill plate that most males do not get.
