Lyonsi Spawn beginning and...end!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mine did that the first couple times they spawned(fought and let the eggs get eaten)but after the 3rd time they gaurded them very well and kept their tank mates away(male was really rough on the female),after the fry were free swimming and i removed them ,my male killed my female(so be careful when you remove the fry you might have to leave some in there)

Thanks for sharing your Lyonsi experience with me, Buddha. It's really good to know that this pair could get things right eventually. If I do have to intervene with the fry, I will make sure to leave plenty for the parents to care for. I don't want to lose the female to an angry mate.

You know, i was thinking that maybe you should remove your tankmates. The CL's are very hard to protect fry from. i bet if you pulled the tankmates or at least dropped a divider in, you would have a successful spawn:)

Jason, I actually thought about removing the CLs. They were the worst of the bunch eating the eggs. The Cutteri just swooped in during the frenzy. The brief times when the parents weren't trying to kill one another, they did an excellent job of keeping the tankmates away. I think a temporary divider would be my first solution though. The eggs were mostly laid on a large rock but a few were placed on a piece of driftwood near the rock. I was thinking of placing another smaller stone near the one that the pair has chosen for a spawning site. That way I could pull the small stone with eggs and raise the resulting fry in another small tank. It's just another option. I'll see how things play out next time and then decide what to do. Thanks for the advice. I know that you have a lot of experience with breeding multiple species of cichlids.

A beautiful pair Al, congrats on the short lived spawn.
lol...Thanks, Justin! I hope your pairs are doing well too.

gruff those two are stunning
Thank you. They are still young so maybe they'll look even better with time.

Nice Update! My Lyonsi pair spawned for their second time while I was out today. I came home about an hour ago and caught them in the act. There are so many eggs this time that the rock can't hold them all. Some are piling up at the base of the spawning site. They are actively guarding the eggs this time (for the moment anyway). They are attacking their reflections, me, and their tankmates. The bad thing is that I have been cycling another tank to place the tankmates in until I sell them. I planned on moving them out today after the weekly water change. But I'm almost tempted to leave things alone and see if the pair can fend off the others. I'm still on the fence about it. I'll post a video soon.

Good to hear, congratulations
Looking forward to the video

I have 4Lyonsi ranging from 4.5-6" that I hope spawn for me someday

Thanks, Regal! I wish you the best with your Lyonsi too.

The parents are still watching over the eggs without any fighting between them this time. The mom seems more responsible than the father. He rather strut around the tank and eat than watch the eggs. They both go nuts against their reflection. I managed to remove the Cutteri shortly after shooting this latest video. It was annoying and hard work. The Cutteri went after the eggs as soon as I cut off the lights so they had to go quickly. The CLs will stay for the time being. Chasing them around was really stressing out the pair so I left them in the tank. Here's the short video:

Wow congrats on the spawn they look amazing in breeding dress. My male centrarchus is like your male lyonsi. He fades in and out of parental care. The female is the one it seems who holds down the fort. My male will randomly roam the tank and look for food and what not leaving mom with the fry. Hopefully this spawn will be successful.
