Ever since I got my Black River puffer I've become more and more curious about their larger cousins. So I've decided that I want to give them a try.

Don't really know much about them, just know that really there are only three large FW puffers available, Mbu, Fahaka, and Pustulatus. Mbu is out of my price range at the moment, and Pust. are rather hard to find, let alone rather far out of my price range. Although if one did become available I would find a way to get it. :) SO that leaves me with Fahaka. :)

Just how hard is it to keep Fahaka? Can you keep them with other fish? Or are they almost certainly a solitary species?

My main question is this. Can you keep a pair of Fahaka together? If so, how do you go about getting a pair, and doing so. Really would be awesome to have a pair of these guys in a large tank swimming side by side. Not sure if this is possible though. Any thoughts or tips?

Thanks!

theyre no harder to keep than any other fish to an experienced fish keeper like yourself.

most fahaka's are straight killers, i'd say about 99% of em wont tolerate any tankmates. as for housing 2 together, forget you even thought about it.

they are also EXTREMELY messy, gotta have massive filtration and WC's.

.

Dang. There has to be SOME way to get a pair out of them! I suppose getting a large group of them and letting them grow up together would be a bad idea as well? Even in a 300gal fish tank?

I just think it would be awesome to have a pair of these guys cruising the tank together.

Is it easier to pair up Pustulatus puffers? Or are ALL the larger puffers solitary?

 nice title

fahakas have been kept with other fish buts its very risky don't keep them with fish you care about generally they are very aggressive and are we'll know for killing all of there tank mates

Breeding is very difficult due to aggression so not much is know about there breeding

Other wise a very fun fish usually pretty active and eats a ton looks cool to like all puffers they need to be feed hard shelled foods to keep there teeth worn down and they need heavy filtration as we'll as large water changes they are very sensitive to ammonia and nitrites

IME, I wouldn't consider trying to pair up Cross River (T. pustulatus) puffers at all. Mine tolerates quick moving tankmates as long as he isn't hungry. With Mbus you might have a better chance, as each seems to be their own person ... err fish. But I still wouldn't do it. In nature they are pretty much solitary predators, right?

People have pretty much covered it here. I would like to add that feeding can become expensive (and very messy) since you need to feed them hard shelled animals like mussles and crayfish to help shave their beaks down.

Like dmop said 99% of them cant be kept with anything of value, LUCKILY I once found a Fahaka that fell into the 1%. Heres a pic of proof!

Your lucky, or your ray is living on borrowed time.

Great fish, they can be kept together, but the requirement is ridiculous. See next post for more info. Too bad you aren't closer, I could get you squared up with a mbu for a good price.

Fahaka and ray have been gone long ago. The Fahaka had to go because his choice of snack were gars not rays!

Fahakas can be kept together, however the tank size requirement is ridiculous. I read an article a while back, and the author was breeding fahaka, but it took a 600+ gallon tank for a small group. PP if you want one, I'd just get one and enjoy him. They take up a ton of space, but are worth it.
