ya i dont know where anyone got the idea that this fish is a female, none of its characteristics look female

If females ever looked that good I would have never gotten rid of my 2.

I really really really want a male jack dempsey, but everytime I grow one out its a female. And I always wait untill they are 6 or more inches jsut to make sure, and every time, the frigging whole fish looks drab and hides all the time and has the electric blue gillplate.

And whats with people thinking females are DRAB? The way you tell if its a female is if its got MORE vibrant speckling on and around the gill plates. My female looks pretty similar and is beautiful

I'd say that would be more to do with keeper care than the fish. Here is my old Petsmart female.

Note the solid blue along the edge of the gill plate. This is a female. The fish in question is a male. 100%.

yes that fish is definately a male...you can tell by the dorsal fin and how pointy it is. Also the colors make it a dead give a way

My female is 7" and just turned 2...If I knew she'd get this fat & B*tchy I'd have named her "Rosie O'Donnel"

I have never actually put him next to a ruler & I like to go on the low end when throwing out sizes of my fish. He has never been in a tank less than 75gallons and now resides in a 300 gallon tank, so I am pretty sure he was not stunted. Max size on Male Dempseys I thought was 10" give or take, so I would think he is on schedule to reach that in the next couple years. I want to thank everyone for their opinions & I am going with male Dempsey from now on.
