Samuel.. hey.. i'd agree with most of them here about the tank size for the aro.. i'd ask you or him to let go off the fish.. if your friend thinks.. its vaastu or its gonna bring him luck.. monetary gain.. that is the biggest load of trash LFS dish out.. vaastu says waterbody and fish.. not aro or flowerhorn.. i'm into construction bro.. so i know this.. i have four aros and my luck is well nothing great.. so anyway.. if thats the line(or not).. please return the fish and save it.. its def a beautiful aro..

@OP: I agree with Kaya's post (in principle). (To add: I think all "Vastu" and Feng Shui is superstitious BS and should not be part of any serious discussion about keeping fish)

The peddlers of the religious BS ("Vastu"/Feng Shui) first lure newbies into buying monster fish in tiny tank. And when the fish inevitably dies, the belief is that "the dead aro took your bad luck away from you"... which basically terrifies the newbie into buying another aro..

As an Indian, imo, this nonsense followed by seemingly educated people including college students is disappointing. :(

About the Aro: This fish is very beautiful and graceful. It is also going to out-grow the tank very soon (2-3 months).

The fish won't show signs of distress which your roommate can notice and take corrective action.. The aro will just become increasing uneasy and die "inexplicable".

Please recommend your roommate to get one of the several thousands of variety of fish which can live happily in a 2.5 ft tank.

My favorite are German Blue Rams.

The Rams in a group of 5 or 6 will give almost all of the fun and exciting behavior you expect from a Flowerhorn and most New World cichlids.

There are other more expensive options like Tanganyikan cichlids (shell-dwellers) and also imported betta.

Good luck,
Sid

If ya click the link in my sig you ca see my arowana that are as long as the tank your currently keeping that aro in.

if u were a fish keeper all ur life and were suddenly forced to study in a hostel such as mine where there are so many restrictions u too would do such stuff to keep ur hobby going...if we could keep a 5 or 6 foot tank in the room we would...

I would have to disagree with this. I'm sure most people here care more about the fish well being than the hobby (with some exceptions). So if size is restricted, so be it. I rather not have a fish than to cramp it in a less than appropriately sized tank and cause it suffering. Keeping a fish knowing that the tank is too small for it just for the sake of "keep the hobby going" is just childish and selfish IMO.

sad really... i have a 75g, more than twice as big as the OP's friends tank and i'd never consider putting an aro in there unless i was already had a 8'x4'x30" up and running. i guess some people just have no self control and no desire to properly care for a living animal.

i went to my LFS today and saw about 10 silvers for sale, each about 3", and more in another tank about 4"-5" for sale. i want one sooo badly but i know i can't properly house one for life nor will i be able to in the near future, so i just admire and keep on walking. you should tell your friend to bring the aro back and just do what i do ;) or else you'll soon have one of these -> :rip

just because your friend now lives in a smaller dwelling and cant get more than 2.5ft tank is no reason to inproperly house such a beautiful fish.

That's why I said "I think" didn't I ? He looks lively, always beg for food and i even get to touch him. Plus i trained him to eat pellets. smaller tanks has it's benefits, easier water change and cheaper too.

water changes and cheaper tanks still dont justify keeping a fish that can reach 4ft and easily 3ft in a 2.5ft tank

Wow, brutal thread! "Passion at its finest" Beautiful fish nevertheless, but yes he should never have purchased that fish without a larger tank or thinking up upgrading really soon, like now;)
