Mag-Drive 12/18 vs Quiet One 6000 (and are my drain holes too big?)

I wasn't refering to flexible PVC, (still too stiff in 2") I'm talking about the stuff that "pool cleaning hose" is made from...with hose barbs...

Yeah, you can still valve those. My ball valves are threaded and I screw in hose barbs on both sides then cut the gap out in the flex line and install the valve. I don't recomend valving your drain line however.

Yeah unless you want to just valve any hole in the tank, I've seen that done,
for "safety" reasons I'm told...I guess you could have a time when you'd want to close all the valves and shut the pump off, for cleaning or service or something like that...definitely not in "run" mode...

great info. i get how the system works. I just tend to still worry (like muscalculating the head height, pump being weaker/stronger than advertised.. but I guess that doesn't matter)

QuietOne pumps have a poor reputation among reef users. Mag Drive is so-so. The hot new pump is the Octopus Waterblaster series. Quiet, high quality construction, 3-yr warranty, and power consumption a fraction of many other pumps.

You'll appreciate the 2" drains the first time something gets clogged in one of the overflows... Because the tank won't overflow.

I left for a 2 day trip once and tossed a few large pieces of Tilapia in my tank right before I headed out. BAD IDEA...

Little to my knowledge my fish didn't eat it all, well it of course found it's way to my overflows and clogged all 3 of them at least 50%... So the pump continued to pump until the sump was empty and the tank was overflowing. I came home to a soaked Kitchen floor, a horrid smelling tank with chunks of gross moldy Tilapia stuck to all the overflows, and a screeching pump that had been running dry for at least a few hours. Oh and that pump? A Quiet One 3000 that started pumping a few seconds after I pulled the first chunk of Tilapia off the overflows and water made it's way to the sump again.

Moral of my story?

- Big Drains won't hurt a thing and may save you a headache in the future if one gets clogged.
- Quiet One Pumps are freaking tough...
- Common Plecos can survive in a sump with 1-2" of water for at least a few hours.
- A few chunks of Tilapia can really ruin your day.
- Don't feed your fish a big meal 2 minutes before you leave for vacation unless you see them eat it all...

isnt the mag drive 18 produces 1800gph and zero head?

QuietOne pumps haven't enjoyed a good reputation over the years. I have a Mag 18, Mag 7, GRI 510, Gen-X Mak 4, Eheim 1260, Quiet One 1200, and a Maxi Jet 3000 and the Quiet One is by far the worst pump.
Just from reviewing the hardware and seeing the actual "kill-a-watt" displays, I think I found my next pump when I need that style of pump...thanks for the heads up...
