I have a 220 with: Eheim 2217, 2234, and a 2229 wet/dry, moderately stocked (170" of fish)
I think you're maintenance is relying to much on the 1" per gallon myth. I don't know you stocking but 170" of fish could be 10 full grown jags or festae in a 220, or 30, 6" fish. This all sounds overstocked to me. Clear water doesn't mean clean water.

If the inch per gallon rule worked, I'd be able to keep a 48" rtc in a 55g.

hmm, the sad fact is, many people with rtc's do think that.

Once a week
Step 1 fill barrels with water and add dechlorinator.
step 2 wait 24 hours and let the temp equal that of the tank water. (Off gases and stabilizes PH)
step 3 Mag float all the glass.
Step 4 75% water change
Step 5 Run diatom filter with some quick carbon to help clean up any nasties in tap water (Heavy metals etc etc)
Tank is spotless !

I also rinse my aquaclear filter sponges once a week in tap water
Recharge or replace purigen every other month (usually still clean)

Service fluval canisters every other month
Change UV bulbs every 6 months
Change 1 micron aqua clear quick filter pads once a week with water change. (I use them to prefilter my UV)

Hope this helps!

Next step is to switch to an industrial type RO system.

30% water change every week. every other week gravel vac:)

I change my water 1 time a month and with a sonic cup....he*l NO i do once or mayb 2 times a week(oscars gotta love the messy fish) and a 25-40% never over 50 unless sick

I change 35% weekly with a 50ft 1/2" water hose from HomeDepot. I refill with warm water straight from the tap. The fish are bigger and are more tolerate therefore I do not age water like I used to.

40-45% wc's every 4 days on my 180g barebottom with a python and i add prime/aquarium salt as I fill back up with temp matched water. Durring this time I also scrub the front and sides with the mag float. This is due to my tank being underfiltered and in semi-direct sunlight while im waiting to get the funds for a pair of fx-5's and/or Diy sump. My 2 FH, GT, Motoro, and plec are all happy and healthy. I rinse my filter pads in separated tank water when flow is considerably slower and I never change my media in the eheim canister, I only rinse/replace the pads when necsesary.

50% WCs/week, via $5 garden hose and $3 faucet adapter for filling. i add the water conditioner as it fills up.

filter maintenance for each one of my tanks:

120 gallon: (FX5 and Eheim 2028, rotation every 6 months).

every six months 1/3 of 1 filter is cleaned. i remove all media and rinse the empty canister as well (if needed). the FX5 never has..

56 gallon: (2 AC110s, rotation every 4-6 weeks).

every 4-6 weeks i rinse 1 sponge of one AC110 in tank water and i will siphon all gunck that has collected at the bottom of the filter as well.

15 gallon: (2 AC20s with prefilter sponges, rotation every 6 months)

prefilter sponge on intake is removed on 1 AC 20 and rinsed in tank water.

Note: aquarium/filter maintenance is a variable thing, it all depends on filters, stock, tank size, flow, Wcs.. etc etc.. basically, there is not specific set time to clean which everyone can follow.
