Because of the placement of my powerhead, there is a very small 1" by 3" hole in my aquarium lid. I thought I had completely escape-proof'd this tank for the Oscar, who is the only one in the tank interested in escaping. The Geo, Plecos, and RTBS could care less about getting out... I didn't think it was even possible for an almost six inch fish to jump through, let alone find, that tiny little space. Well, he did, in the middle of the night...By the time I found him in the morning he was already dead. I'm so sad, I was positive I had made it escape-proof. He was my first monster fish. ):

Now I'm going to go in a different direction with my tank. Not positive what I want to do, but I'm seriously considering getting an Armored Bichir. I've heard they're escape artists so I want to make 100% sure that no fish is getting out of this tank again..

So, how do YOU escape-proof your tank? How do you cover all those little spaces by heaters/filters/powerheads?

omg that is tiny!

what kind of top do you run? I've got a glass top and it's pretty heavy. The only slits I make are in these plastic pieces, which are attached to the back side of the glass, just enough to fit my HOB filter and a small little square in the corner, which the heater, circulation pumps, etc all run through.

Glass tops are virtually escape proof. My ACF used to constantly escape her tank, through a 1" hole in the plastic hood, until I got glass lids for the tank. No escapes since then, and that was almost 10 years ago.

no such thing.. and imo 99% of jumps can be avoided by provideing enough hide spots, compatable tank-mates, and good water... the 3 main reasons ive had fish jump. there are a few exceptions ot the rule... but ime not many. also not topping the tank off to the tippy top... particularly with air breathers i try and not over do my lids... just a reg glass top.

I have used foam pipe insulation that has self adhesive on it to stick around areas where either glass just can't fit exactly or around some pipe fittings. It keeps my albino frog from taking the ride to the sump in the overflows and getting out in other areas
