If you have a power washer then spray it down to get all the nasties off. then soak it in a salt solution, if your really worried about parasites or fungus then soak it in a water bleach solution. it doesn't take very much bleach, make sure you rinse it very we'll before adding it to your tank. i would soak it in a bleach solution then drain the water completly. refill it with fresh water then drain it and refill it around 4-5 times giveing it a day or so with each soak. after that rinse it off we'll with either your shower head or a garden hose either will work and then it should be ready make sure you can't smell any bleach on it

thanks everyone, im a broke ass college student and i didnt want to buy a huge piece of driftwood lol
I have some nice "wood" from a try I chopped down. Any one know if I could do that same thing? just soak it for a few weeks in big salt water tubs? or is it not possible since the try has only been dead for a few months and is still not dry
Table salt won't hurt anything if used for this. It only has trace amounts of iodine in it, and this amount hasn't been proven to hurt fish (most still won't use it). If you want piece of mind, kosher salt is pretty cheap and is plain salt. I have still seen people use table salt with no ill effects.
If Mercury is considered a heavy metal couldnt he soak it in the tub with a big pouch of activated carbon?

And bleach will work too, just don't use a high concentration or it will bleach the wood.
Pressure washing is bad advise. My pressure washer can remove mortar from between bricks. It will also cut a hole in wood without even trying. Additionally, pressure washers don't do anything in the way of sanitation.
ive been soaking the wood in a salt solution for 2 days now and i plan on soaking it in water for a few days i was just wondering how long i need 2 continue to soak it?
