if it has a detectable amount of mercury you def do not want to bake it. Mercury becomes gas at a very low temp and is extremly deadly when in gas form. We had a mercury spill in my middle school and they had to close the entire school down because the janitor came in a vacuumed it up. Fire department came, school was closed for about a week. Pretty much any cloth like material in the class room at the time had to be disposed of by the hazmat crew...pretty crazy...

I have no idea how you remove mercury safely and then dispose of it...if it is standard mercury levels like people talk about in every lake and river then dont worry about it I would say, but if its a proven unsafe level, then take caution...

I would also refrain from boiling if very high levels are present too...didnt mention that...

thnx ive been soaking it with salt for the past few days and it looks pretty clean so far, i did research and the mercury is only in the fish which is why we cannot eat them im just concerned about parasites and whatnot now, but the salt should take care of that

ive been soaking the wood in a salt solution for 2 days now and i plan on soaking it in water for a few days i was just wondering how long i need 2 continue to soak it?

That's plenty of time. It only takes several hours to kill the most hardy parasites. Soak it in fresh water for several minutes and it will be tank ready.
