Where was the place local, just so i know where not to go

Im jealous, and the build hasnt even really started lol

Tom's Cypress, in Waldo FL. I don't get it, because my friend went there and bought some gorgeous cypress knees and after a wicked fungus stage, all is well in his tank and they look impeccable. This summer I bought cypress knees as well but they all rotted and disintegrated. And now when I went back I had another round of bad luck.

Hey Justin, good to see you! I think the heater thing might be trial and error for me. I bought a 300w Visi-Therm which I plan on placing behind the background near the filter intake. Is it safe to attach heaters to the acrylic tank wall? If not, I'll have to get some sort of guard for it.

I thought about getting an inline heater but I think that might be overkill because my house is currently 80 degrees (Florida, ya know) and in the winter I expect it to be no lower than 70. I have to keep it around that temp anyway for my parrots. Hopefully the Visi-Therm will give it that little boost to stay 75+. Also, isn't the attachment for an inline heater 1/2 to 3/4"? That would be difficult to modify a 1" FX5 hose to fit the heater.

Hey! :D I have been using heaters against the wall of acrylic for years with no issues. Those little suction cups keep the unit far enough away from the acrylic. I used about 4-5 of these type guards so far. I was more concerned about the background than the acrylic. I have a couple extra you can have if you don't mind a couple bucks in shipping (you can probably buy them locally cheaper though).

Your right on the line sizing. I'm splitting an FX5 return so I can run an inline heater and UV. Are you planning on running UV with this setup? Seems overkill for one fish IMO. Side note, I just saw your con for the first time last night and that is a BEAUTIFUL fish! Good on you for taking such good care of it.. :)

Definitely subscribing to this thread! Can't wait to see how this works out for you :D

And I love your precious corgis, be sure to fit them into the thread too!

Ooh, thanks for the offer! I might have to take you up on one of those. Let me get back to you on that one. :)

Wow, thanks! That con was my first cichlid ever, his name is "Jack". Unfortunately he's been recovering from a ruptured swim bladder for the last three months and he still isn't back to normal. He spends about half the time lying on his side, and the other half begging for food. ;) I would have euthanized him, honestly, but his appetite is still fantastic and the fish vets at school told me not to give up. At this point I'm very attached to him, so I can't give up on him, especially when he wags his whole body asking for food.

Can you run any HOBs with the background you have picked?

Do you worry about the intake for canisters being behind something so big, even with the drilled holes? Do you think you will need to do a little more minor cleaning of poop with that? Just curious after reading this whole thing..and congrats...Ive seen your posts and this seems to be something you really wanted to do so thats awesome

I won't be running any HOBs because the slots on the lid of the tank won't be large enough for them to fit. I do worry a little bit about mechanical filtration, but I'm copying the most common design for 3D backgrounds (i.e. filter intake in back, output in front) and it seems to work for other people. I will probably do a spraybar for output to ensure even flow distribution, and if needed I'll get a powerhead to circulate any stagnant areas.

Wow, it is going to look awesome!!!

looking forward to it!

That's awesome. I'm sure your tank is going to look amazing. Can't wait to see it all finished up.

Thank you, I can't wait for the tank to come in so I can get started!

Thanks-- I'm excited to see your new setup develop too! Did you decide on a stocking list for yours?

Sorry that there's not much of an update tonight.... I had to drive 6 hours today for work and spent 8 hours working in the sun. I am sunburnt and worn out. Three boxes of stuff from Petsolutions and Foster&Smith Aquatics were waiting for me when I got home, but unfortunately I have a paper to finish tonight so that will have to take precedence. I look forward to cracking open the boxes tomorrow and being reminded of how much money I spent, lol. :)

Have a fantastic night, everyone!
