1 month update. Sorry for all the pics just excited about this guys progress. Moved him to a 120 today so he has a bit more room to swim around. My wife picked the gravel btw.... not my first choice lol. But he's a little over 5". So in a month he's put on almost 2" =]

Head growth has slowed down a bit. Any tips or tricks or is he on the path for a decent sized head. I realize it's not a waterhead and Im cool with that. First flowerhorn I've had with a semi water head though. Only had hard heads in the past. Feeding a good varied diet and doing water 25% water changes twice a week. Filters turn water over 10x per hour. Just wondering if there's any tips I could get from some of you flowerhorn pros out there =]

2 month update. Trying to find this guy a nice little female to start a breeding project with. His current girlfriend is just temporary to make sure he's fertile. Do you guys think if I feed him grand sumo his colors will be more vibrant or will get more colors on his kok? I realize it's not a high grade flowerhorn but still trying to get the best bang for my buck. Thanks!

If you give him a tank by himself, you might be able to get more out of him.
In terms of what you can get out of him I agree with this post I quoted. If you want to see what his full potential is for head growth and color he needs to be by himself. Its all in his genes. I have watched monster kok flower horns kept in 45 gallon tanks with weekly water changes and a plain pellet diet look competition ready. Some hobbyists use mirrors to stimulate them, and thats fine but ultimately but I believe you get the best physical appearance when they are by themselves. If you are trying to breed him he will always have a smaller head due to energy going towards breeding. Many male's heads shrink when they breed. Your male has what appears to be a hard kok. They typically won't get really large. Grand Sumo is an amazing food that I use too. Its a great staple diet. His pearls may look a little more colorful, but him being by himself would yield the best results. If you are having fun trying to breed him then just do that. Happy fish and a happy owner is ultimately the end goal.

Thank you for the input guys. I'll net the silver dollars and the female convict sometime this weekend and see how he turns out.

Figured I'd post another update. Pushing 8" now. Tried to breed him to a female SRD but after several failed attempts I've put breeding him on the back burner. Got a bit of healing to do from his spawning attempts but glad he's turned out the way he has =]
