Thats a bunch of bologna. All cichlids even tiny little Mbuna have some sort of teeth. I have seen Oscars with enormous teeth the size of a Mota's. Teeth don't fall out because the fish is sick it's because they were forced out by fighting or mouthing on things. I mean almost all even have visible teeth. Teeth will grow no matter what even if in horrible conditions unless that ofcourse if it has some jaw affecting disease or injury. Oh and JD's are very know to have larger teeth almost like a Texas's teeth.

ok so whats the deal??? you say you have seen a oscar with enormous teeth and gourami swami said "Oscars have "grinding plates" and teeth in their throats." well what is it? i too have never seen a oscar with external teeth, im not calling you a liar by any means, im just saying i have not seen it, and graumi said so aswell,, could you perhaps provide a pic? i think a oscar would look bad azz with teeth showing,

They have grinding plates and teeth in their throat, they don't have teeth like say a dovii, thats what I think overstocked and I are saying. I have never seen a big oscar with teeth like some of my other sa/ca cichlids.

In fact at an LFS they have a tank full of these huge oscars that are always flaring at each other with their mouths open and I have never seen any teeth on their front lower lips. It looks smooth.

But I have heard of some oscars having teeth in the front, but there are so many different strains of Oscars I wouldn't be surprised if some adapted more toward where they originate from.

I recently learned red devils lose their big lips after a few generations in aquaria because they don't use them like they do in the wild. Couldn't this also be the same idea with Oscars? I have never seen any teeth (I am talking the ones on the front of the jaw like my trimacs and convicts have) on my oscar, and he is almost 10 inches.

oscars have teeth on their mouth just most are not visible they are hidden in their lips, they also have pharyngeal teeth in their throats, the reason oscars lose lip locks is because they have a much weaker jaw structure than say a jag or midas
heres 2 pics of a jag skull http://www.biolib.cz/IMG/GAL/12860.jpg

nice pics bolty, yes I can definitely see the teeth on them. You can understand how I have never seen the teeth on them compared to maybe say my 4 inch trimac or 4 inch salvini though right? The jag skull is crazy, I had no clue they had that prodominant of teeth. Oscar's have nothing compared to that jag though, that could also be why they lose liplocks.

oscars have teeth!!!!!!! that thing looks like a beast!!!!!!

Pet stores always told me that oscars dont have teeth ,that inside them are sharp grinders.I finally found proof in that pic.
