I would also say female, although the first pic does look more male
agreed, it's a female but i'll give it to ya' that it looks a lot like a male. great looking fish.

Going by body shape, fin shape, and the gill plate it's a girl. Males will have no blue on the lower gill plate. Females can have a lot, or small amounts.

My old male with fry.

i had a blue gene female that was 7" and was mean as hell lol

well in some cases iys hard to tell them apart like this one you ll have to try another one with it to see if it spawns or not ?

alright thanks every1. and yea i hope they spawn. I have a pleco and I heard that if the female lays eggs, the pleco will eat the eggs during the night while the male and female are sleeping. is this true?

Not too cause any more confusion but I think thats a male. That ''females have blue on there gill plate'' I dont buy any more. I've had 2 males with blue on there chin. Best way I notice the difference is speckling and there dorsal fin. Males dorsals will end in a sharp point while females are softly rounded over. If you must know right away, just vent the fish.

Heres a good read on sex venting.

I read alot on dempsey sexing and as far as I know, checking the dorsal fin almost never works. and i dont know if I should vent the fish because that would cause alot of stress. but I'll consider it.

Same here. Been reading about them for almost 12 years. If he/she was 2-3'' I would be concerned w/ venting but at that size and as long as done quickly and carefully, I think he/she will be alright. Its done quite often.
