male or female dempsey?

I will literally put $20 on that fish being a female. I don't see how anyone can say it's a male.

If anyone saying male is confident enough to take me up, if this fish ends up being male down the road (IE pairs and fertilizes eggs) I'll PayPal you $20. On the other hand, if it's a girl (IE lays eggs) I get $20. ;)

LOOK like a female to me. males are devoid of speckles on the lower jaw. yours seems to HAVE speckles. therefore i think she is a she.

Female vent...I was wrong....Modest is correct....oomale oO female....That vent is oO 100%...she is gravid as well....

Gill plates are generally a reliable way to sex dempseys in my experience... although I can admit it is often tricky to spot the difference between "blue splotches" which suggest female and "blue speckles' which males sometimes have trickling down onto their lower gill plate...

I think the fish in question here has the gill plate of a male...

I have owned many Dempseys that have proven other somewhat common 'sexing' methods wrong, such as body shape, head shape, body speckles or pointied fins...

But all in all, I tend to look at a collection of features and also consider in behavior when sexing dempseys in my own tanks...

I'm no expert at venting, but I just pulled 3 Dempseys out of my tanks that I have bred and therefore know their gender without question... and after looking at their vent I'm suggesting the picture above is the vent of a male...

I'm very confident in what I've said, although have no mood or desire to argue... I won't take the $20 bet but will gladly take you up for friendly bragging rights ;-)

PS - When viewing the pics provided by the OP keep in mind he used a flash, which really 'brings out' the reflective blue speckling or splotches.

I was told that mine is male. I can see the difference between them. Mine is about 7 inches right now. Very shy too and doesn't bother anyone. His best friend is his convict (not sure on the sex tho) and a yoyo. They all guard each other. I was going to sell them, but somewhere in the last two months, I have fallen for him.
