Please help. Was told female but kind of looks male. So I got a couple pics of it and it's vent

That pic #3 is a really really GREAT shot! Excellent camera-work I like when Nature is captured "in the act" of their primordial instincts. I don't like seeing fish fight and liplock, but the picture itself is awesome for what it is

Can you explain the purpose of the egg crate buried in sand for me, plz?
