Male or female?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hey BIG_ONE. so i did actually pull the divider. and they did lock jaws but didn't seem to extremely aggressive like they were trying to kill each other... they gently grabbed each others jaw and then played tug a war for a bit then would go directly next to each other and swim in circles together. is that a mating behavior? or are they actually fighting?

If they're locking jaws, it can mean they're fighting. A lot of flowerhorn that lock jaws have hard a time breeding. The male is suppose to know how to keep control of the female and the female is suppose to get the male's attention. Your male is very small as well, can be dangerous for breeding. She can and will kill your male right after their guard mode is in session. Unlike CA/SA cichlid breeding, flowerhorn isn't quite the same. Keep a very close watch to their behavior.
P.S. - It can also mean that they do not like each other.

okay thank you for the info and the warnings. i greatly appreciate it. i am new to the whole flowerhorns. so everything is a learning experience.

Oh lookie. It's a male LOL.

Figured a long while ago before that latest picture. I'm not too sure what you guys see in it to identify it as a female right away.
P.S. - Silk female looks look they been rubbing themselves on charcoal.

BIG_ONE.. what do you mean the females look like they have been rubbing themselves on charcoal? is their color a different color?
