So could a horse or a cow, but it doesn't mean when they are mentioned in the news they put in the first paragraph "a kick from one of these could be lethal". It's all about image, and the negative one. Just to make their story sound more interesting too.

Yes but be realistic what are chances of horse or cow making it's way into your yard lol . A large lizard can easily go over a fence .

Cows and Horses are domesticated animals. That's like comparing apples to oranges. We should be more upset with the lazy pet owner who lost and failed to report or let this animal go.

Well tecnicly a german sherperd could do much worse if it wanted to. Even a cocker;) Have you even wandered if that lizard had the heat it needed to fell hungry and kill said pet. Most lizards when they excape are totaly confused ,fell cold and lost. The last thing they want is to get into troble, they will escape at any given chance. And what kind of people would leave a pupy, kitten, etc unsecured ,unsupervised or unrestricted? In that case the lizard would be the last of worrys, it inst needed, our modern world provides more than enogff danger;)

The comparison to cows and horses are a stretch. Most people that hanvnt lived in the concrete jungle their whole lives would simply walk up to a cow or horse in their back yard as most likely the animal is safe. I think we can all agree its not the safest thing to just walk up to a 6ft nile you are not familiar with and try to catch it.

Should the writer have said that the animal was cute and cuddely?

I saw this story on the local news. The guy who captured it was the homeowner, but a local pet store owner was with him at the time. A monitor like that could be dangerous or not, depending on how tame he is. I worked at a LFS where the owner would walk around with a five-footer hanging on his back for hours... The croc comparison was definitely a stretch!

Good thing they caught it now! It would have frozen to death in Grants Pass this winter!

Everyone is upset with the journalist. The real jerk is the irresponsible pet owner, prolly let it go on purpose thats why it wasnt reported.

I agree . I feel bad for many of these big lizards and snakes most wind up in horrible cramped conditions.

Most who buy them aren't going to keep them like some here keep them . They don't think it through . The animal gets big .

I live in the country... so maybe I have a more blinkered view.
1) Cows can jump and jump very high. I've seen them clear est. 5ft.
2) There are cow related deaths every year in my imediate area (and not including the ones where people have hit them with cars and come just as bad off ;) )
3) Cows had jumped into my neighbours garden and trashed it. I don't remember reading in the news that they also could have stampeded or simply attacked her or her 2 small dogs etc. They were just example animals that people think are lovely and cuddly and more popular but just as/more dangerous.

So maybe I don't think it's quite the same stretch. Either way I'm just saying it's said in the first paragraph to draw in readers and continue the negative view that all reptiles are monsters. No need to keep up the bad reputation because they already have a bad reputation. Just my opinion.

And yes it was the original pet owners fault.

I have a big cow farm down block from me with 2 seperated herds. The above picture though lousy since taken from moving car with cell phone show's a few and never heard of any jumping.

The fence is about 4 feet high barb wire . Each herd even has a powerhouse bull (which keeps me from snake collecting there) .
They are long horn cows maybe to big to jump.
