Managuense cihlid help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
(Update) I treated the tank with the general cure and i now almost 24 hr in and the started expelling white stingy (i am assuming worms). I have been scooping the ones a see and dropping them in bleach before of disposing of them. The ones i miss i would assume would be dead and i just remove them with the siphon during the waterchange at the end of the treatment correct? Also when the initial treatment is done how long between before i start a second wave of general cure and kanamycin treatment?

Oh and btw I took advantage of the petco 1 dollar per gallon sale and got a 20g long quarantine for future purchases. Should be set up as soon as this ordeal is taken care of.

The QT tank makes treat much eaiser and cheaper. Wait 24 hours between treatments with a big water change (50%+) and substrate cleanning during that time then treat with both the GC and the Kana together as per instructions on the package. After that treatment is done do another large water change and substrate vacuming. Withhold food for an additional 3 days after treatment is finished and he should be as good as new. Let me know if you have any questions or trouble.

Well another update! Got the kana today, so i started barrage number two of the gc! So far so good! One question how long should it take before the worms are totally eradicated when using this stuff?? It seems like they finally quit excreting em, last one i seen was this morning(def excited about this treatment!). Tell you guys what though the fish are def getting grumpy without getting their food haha.

After this treatment is finished they should be good. I happy to here the fish is doing better, good job.

Well these things are def quite resiliant little buggers! I have not seen anymore worms in the one twenty five so hopefully i got them eradicated! Now my seventy five is another story!! i was treating that tank the same time as the one twenty five as a (just in case), and the little green terror has another worm hanging out after two treatments!! The jaguar catfish and blue convict have showed no signs of worms the entire treatment just the green terror. Should i give them a week or so to eat and build their strength back up before throwing another treatment at them?? I ask because they are getting really skinny! thanks in advance!

Take one packet of GC and in a cup with just enough water to deslove it, soak some pellets for about 20 mins. Dump the whole thing into the tank. Feed them this way for 7 days while treating the tank at the same time. Then stop treating for three weeks.

In three weeks do the same thing as above adding the Kanamycin to the tank along with the GC at this time.

Hey I have one more question would i be better off trying a different medication to eliminate these? Reason i ask is i just seen another worm from the green terror and cuban cichlid in the 125 gallon also and in another thread i seen you said gc would not kill them only levimasole would unless that was because of different parameters of the tank? I trust the treatment your giving me and i am not second guessing you but i just didnt understand that was all thanks in advance!

Oh one more thing when treating for the seven days strait do i just follow the gc directions or should i go about it a little differently??

Levimasole is an excelent durg for this but it is diffacult to find so since your fish are eating and you have GC I opted for that as long as it can be delivered into the fish via a food soak it will work, it wasn't completly effective as an intank treatment however even with the Kanamycin which is a good combination. Fenbendazole found in Safe-Guard 8 in 1 canine wormer can also be used as a food soak and feed. I would use the Prazi/Metro combination as a soak the way I suggested before going to the others that are more diffacult to use and dose. By me levimasole is only availabe from a vet, but the fenbendazole can be bought at Petsmart.

Pluse I'm not always right, I really should have advised you to soak the meds from the start, even with the Kana which improves absorbtion. Don't worry about second guessing me I do it all the time. ;)

Hey its all good and i appreciate the help!
Ok so heres the run down,
I treat the one twenty five with 13 packets gc (130 gallons worth) and the seventy five with eight packets gc (80 gallons worth) on day one.
Every morning during the treatment i soak both tanks hikari gold pellets in one packet of gc for twenty min and feed it to them.(dumping the excess into the tank "Preference on which one?")
I then wait 48 hrs and add a second treatment of 13 packets for the 125 and 8 for the seventy five.
Next i wait another 48 hrs and do a large scale waterchange and that concludes treatment one.
Should i modify this in some way to make it more effective ( already removed all hidings and decorations should i remove gravel?)
How long after the intitial dose should i try to gravel vac to get the paralyzed worms?
sorry for so many questions but i really wanna save these guys!!
