managuense male is highly aggressive towards female mate

The egg crate is the way to go....first your female has to get acclimated to your tank...then the two have to bond...then the female has to become ready to spawn... your female needs the time and the safety and separation a divider will provide.. In my opinion she needs to be able to roam at least one side of the tank and get comfortable . And time for her reproductive urge to kick in . After she gets acclimated on her side of the tank, when you see an increased appetite ,see her coloring up and getting fat and doing some digging of craters ... those will be the signals ... When you see her sticking close to the divider to be near the male.. ....when ready the female will be doing her best to get over dig under or go around that divider...it's situations like this introducing male and female pairs that didn't grow up together and pair from a small size that most makes the divider necessary... After they bond you could use it at your discretion periodically if they have problems...

The incomplete divider has always worked for me. I also like to provide the female with a place to escape the male on his side of the wall. It gives the female a chance to stay with the male even when he is rough and she wants to spawn. I took two clay pots, knocked out the bottoms and siliconed them (big ends) together. She could pass through while the male could`nt get in. Many times the female would lay her eggs inside the pots where he could not fully fertilize all of them. not a bad thing when you consider how many eggs we are talking about and how often they can spawn.

Here's a female that's not in a position to spawn( in with too many others and she's not the most dominant female )but she's definitely ready.... That's what you want to see your female looking like.... Give her time and I think she will...

Great to hear your female is eating....I see you got some drift wood to prop the divider....it would be good to get some suction cups and /or some magnets placed up against to keep it secure.... My jags always seem to have a special talent for getting on one side or the other when it wasn't secure and I wasn't home for a while....
And your male really is looking nice... Hope to see a spawning thread from you in the near future.....

My Jag pair acted same thing but my pair is smaller in size (3.5 inches female and 6.5 inches male), as first the male beat on female none stop for almost a week and female jag went into hide mode under some driftwood caves. When she ready to lay eggs she came out and start prepare the cave with the male jag...then her aggression become/built up more and more to the point she start beat up my male jag (male jag got all fin, tail teared up and missing some body scales) and keep him away from the cave until fry become free swimming...female aggression with egg/fry way more violent than male jag IMO.
