The egg crate is the way to go....first your female has to get acclimated to your tank...then the two have to bond...then the female has to become ready to spawn... your female needs the time and the safety and separation a divider will provide.. In my opinion she needs to be able to roam at least one side of the tank and get comfortable . And time for her reproductive urge to kick in . After she gets acclimated on her side of the tank, when you see an increased appetite ,see her coloring up and getting fat and doing some digging of craters ... those will be the signals ... When you see her sticking close to the divider to be near the male.. ....when ready the female will be doing her best to get over dig under or go around that divider...it's situations like this introducing male and female pairs that didn't grow up together and pair from a small size that most makes the divider necessary... After they bond you could use it at your discretion periodically if they have problems...
