From eggs to wigglers will 2-3 days.then 2-3 more before the are free-swimming.most cichlids will argue over duties.females will make sure he does the patroling, they both can injure or kill tankmates.I would get the festae out of there.problem with the divider is that the pair won't have much room.sometimes M or F can turn on the mate

Got it! Thank you so much.
As soon as the egg laying started, the festae were put into another tank. Now there are just the 2 Jags and a 3 1/2 inch pleco in the 100 Gallon. As soon as this was done the aggression stopped. Now, as you mentioned, it appears they are just arguing over who is in the pot and who is patrolling. As usual....the male get's the raw end of the deal and got the boot! lol. She is fanning/inspecting the eggs while the male watches from a distance. It looks like she is laying more eggs but refuses to let him in.

I've read that the fist spawn is not something you could really count on. But, for future reference...How much could I expect to charge for fry? From a LFS or private buyer?
Thanks in advance for all your help!

Its good the festae are out, keep an eye on the pleco they can eat eggs and they might kill him if he wanders close even if has no intention to steal.your right some cichlid parents will need multiple batches of eggs to get it right, they do learn.fry will probably not sell for much, see if you raise them to an inch.sometimes LFS will offer you store credit

Day 2: Male took over fanning duties for a few seconds during feeding. The female was quick and vicious with the food then returned to the pot giving the male the boot.

I opened the photo in paint, zoomed WAY in and attempted to count the eggs by putting a red dot over each one....
Obviously, I missed some and small groups which were indistinguishable were counted as 1. I was satisfied that I had covered all visible (to me) eggs and ended up with a count of 404!

sell em for $1.50 each at 1" and you have some money there... im raising up a group of 12 jags right now from liveaquaria and waiting for 2 to pair off... i bet i can sell my fry around here because NONE of my lfs's have any jaguars ever (hence my liveaquaria order)

Thanks!
Yeah, They definitely wouldn't go anywhere until at least 1 inch but was curious. Same here on the LFS, I was going to order a pair this Friday. Neither the owner/clerk at the LFS knew what they were! I showed the clerk a photo this morning(I'm there all the time..) of a full grown jag, the manager/owner said they would definitely be interested in 1-2 inch specimens and that I got "lucky".

Just an update!

I now have a huge mass of wigglers. The parents are constantly chasing the older ones as they are swimming around/away from the pot. They scoop them up with they're mouth and spit them back out into the mass.
Any advice on when to start feeding? Some are younger/older so I crushed up some food (powder), placed it in a syringe with aquarium water, and squirted it in the direction of the more independent swimmers.
Thanks in advance!

If most of them are free-swimming then you can use your method, plus get the fry/powder food if you want variety.hikari first bites is one brand.the parents will also crush food and dig to stir up food for them.oh and cover your filter intakes if you havent already

Awesome, I really appreciate the input. I just want to make sure I maximize the quality of the surviving fry and/or make sure I don't do anything to screw things up!
