Mankato
I have a nano reef that doesnt have monsters and therefore is boring me, so im looking into getting a mantis shrimp.

But first I need to know the ins and out of mantis keeping!

Please tell me any tips you can and I have some specific questions.

1. What do I feed? Krill?

2. Any special needs?

3. Do I still need to use RO water?

4. Will I be able to see it often or will it always hide?

5. Whats the coolest kind in your opinion?

6. Wheres the best place to buy?

7. Anyone have any they want to get rid of?

8. What kinds cool in your opinion...smashers or spearers

9. Can I keep more than one in a tank?

10. Is there anything ive missed?

Thanks

VLDesign still has one for sale..... Check his add in the classifieds. The thing is insane.

Maybe we can work out something along the lines of me picking it up when I head out there in a few weeks then you could just swing down here to pick up.

Don't know if other people go to the lenghts I do to get fish but just thought I'de throw it out there.....

I know stuff is REALLY hard to find around where I'm at so when something pops up for sale it means roadtrip...even if it's a 7 hr drive one way to the next state over....LOL

1. What do I feed? Krill? Depends on the type, crustaceans and molluscs for smashers, fish for spearers

2. Any special needs? Standard water chem for inverts

3. Do I still need to use RO water? I never did with mine, the "cockroach of the sea"

4. Will I be able to see it often or will it always hide? Depends on the size and species, my big peacock always came out when you walked by

5. Whats the coolest kind in your opinion? Peacock, the biggest smasher and outgoing

6. Wheres the best place to buy? LFS? Online?

7. Anyone have any they want to get rid of? Can't help you there

8. What kinds cool in your opinion...smashers or spearers Spearers are much more rare, as the don't usually come in with live rock (sand dwellers). But they hide a lot

9. Can I keep more than one in a tank? Not a good idea, unless they're breeding

10. Is there anything ive missed? Thick tank glass or acryllic

ok thanks all for the help. Id like to avoid online buying if possible as I dont want to pay the shipping charge for one animal and since I dont live in a house im not aware of when packages arrive. Are they readily available in the fish market? I may just ask my LFS to order one.

Actually I found one! A zebra Mantis its a spearer for $55. What do you guys think?

they have a golden mantis too

Also do you guys think a scorpion leaf fish would work with a mantis? It sure doesnt act like a normal fish

The zebra mantis is AWESOME. They are the largest species, over 12". They'll make a burrow in deep sand...

They'll probably mangle a scorpionfish too. Only fish I've ever had with them were very fast species, like damsels.

that settles it...its mine! I will just put in some lower watt lighting and another bag of sand. Are there anything that can live with them?
