Map turtle

I was wondering about the description of maps on ATP, why does a 5" turtle need a 90g tank? I mean, I wish I could give all my animals that kind of space but wouldn't a 40breeder or a 55 do fine (unless you get a female, then I could see the expanded quarters)

You mean females grow quite large;) Most males stay on the 10cm mark or a bit less.

Ummm....that's what I said coura. ;) When buying a baby turtle that has such different ranges in sizes between the sexes it's always smart to plan on ending up with the bigger of the two.

Re: fish, in my experience maps tend to ignore fish. Still, if you want to keep fish with him, go with something both harmless and expendable.

I have an Ouachita map about the size of yours and a tiny YOY stinkpot in a planted tank with a bunch of bluefin killifish, blackspotted topminnows, banded pygmy sunfish, single individuals of three or four other fish species, and two lesser sirens. I have had no fish losses, though the ghost shrimp population needs occasional replenishment (I believe the sirens are to blame).

I have a male Mississippi map and he's pretty much full grown. I keep some rosies in the tank and he will eat them. I had about 2 dozen in there 2 weeks ago and now there are only 2 left. He gets fed other things too. Reptomin, brine shrimp and romaine lettuce. I also have him in a 55 gallon and it's plenty big for him and it's only 2/3 full.

As far as lighting you gonna need a heat bulb and a UVB light (10-12 hours a day) as well in the same area so he can bask and absorb the proper calcium in his diet while also drying out. Also get a turtle cuttle bone. Mine started eating it almost immediately.

He cracks me up cause he sleeps on his log like a bloated dead turtle. Head resting on the log, front legs stretched straight out and back legs straight out up in the air.
