I have a male Mississippi map and he's pretty much full grown. I keep some rosies in the tank and he will eat them. I had about 2 dozen in there 2 weeks ago and now there are only 2 left. He gets fed other things too. Reptomin, brine shrimp and romaine lettuce. I also have him in a 55 gallon and it's plenty big for him and it's only 2/3 full.

As far as lighting you gonna need a heat bulb and a UVB light (10-12 hours a day) as well in the same area so he can bask and absorb the proper calcium in his diet while also drying out. Also get a turtle cuttle bone. Mine started eating it almost immediately.

He cracks me up cause he sleeps on his log like a bloated dead turtle. Head resting on the log, front legs stretched straight out and back legs straight out up in the air.

I love their look. how big is your adult male?

Oh not bad at all thats actually great in the turtle world. Some females are huge (I have never seen adult maps only sliders)

I caught a large female Common Map last summer that was looking for a place to lay her eggs. Her straight carapace length was at least 11". She was a big turtle, and very old by the looks of her.

Maps IMO and have only seen pics and animal shows as adults hold their colors much better than most turtles with sliders atleast big females I have seen being very drab .

Here are some adult Graptemys ouachitensis with an adult slider for size comparison. Ouachitas and Mississippis are very similar in size.

That particular slider does not look bad at all contradicts what I said but the large adult females I have seen in area are very drab .
The males are a different story.

Are you sure you're not switching the genders? Males often show reticulate melanism, like ol' Stumpy here:
