maracyn vs maracyn 2

kanamyacin and nitrofurazoneare better choices if you are going to order antibiotics. Maracyn 1 and 2 have limited shelf lives and one is actually toxic after a certain age (forget which one).

How long can I keep these??? I want to have a stock of meds and stuff on hand as my populations expand. If keeping maracy is bad I won't but can I hold onto these other two you mentioned for 3 or more years at a time???

I keep them in the freezer and from what I understand if kept in a cool dry place they will last a very long time. Maracyn 2 btw is the one that gets toxic. Maracyn TC is tetrecycline and is not as useful in fish as in mammals. Maracyn is not that useful either and is harsh on the biofilter

Well when trying to cover all your bases I'm just making sure that I could med all 3 at once without conflict or to much overlap. I can right??? I've used tetracycline before, would it be cheaper to by it not under the maracyn label???

Also thanks for the heads up on freezing, how long is long? 3-5 years or longer??? Stuff isn't cheap so I'd hate to get it and toss it ya know.

like 5 years or, longer with a bit of loss of potency. You can get 100grams of kanamyacin for $60 and 100 grams of nitrofurazone for $15 and that is a ton of medicine and should treat most everything bacterial better than the maracyns. Oxytetracycline is a useful one too especially in food.

Awesome thank you so much!

According to mardel, minocycline is for both gram positive and gram negative bacteria, treating aermonas, columnaris, and vibro. It does not treat pseudomoas and from what ive heard it does affect the Benifical bacteria as the more "seasoned" benifical bacteria is gram negative. Of course, fish can get both gram positive and gram negative, its all just a shot in the dark unless you want to gram stain and grow cultures. Ive used maracyn 2 and it worked well, for guppies sick with columnaris (always a big problem) where as modern day expensive high flutten kanamyin didnt touch it. Go figure. As far as im concerned, ill stick with the tetracycline antibiotics, they've never let me down yet. And yall know how guppies get sick all the time.
